Right here, on the east side of Polaris, with the soft glow of the Spire to his back and the cold stone underneath his paws. He could imagine a zoo fitting here. What's a zoo, you ask? It was a word of Zookeeper's own creation, but one easily defined: a special place where lesser gembound from all over Origin could be displayed and cared for.

Why? Well, why not? The cougar loved animals. He was also under the notion that the various creatures of the caves could easily disappear any day, whether by overhunting or drastic change to the caves, and the only reason it hadn't happened yet was mere luck. Perhaps it has already happened, and those lost species were forgotten in the sands of time. But here, here in his future zoo, they will be happy. They will be safe.

Zookeeper caught himself padding back and forth as he thought about all of this. Shaking his head roughly, he turned his attention towards actually doing something with all the ideas in his head. What do you need to make a successful zoo, anyways? It wasn't like there were any experts on the matter he could consult.

Well, you first need animals, of course.

And where will the animals live? What's preventing them from just walking out? He needed some kind of barrier to keep them in their designated places. A fence around each exhibit, perhaps, with a perimeter wall in case those fail. Oh, and they have to be spacious, too, to give the animals room to move.

What about food? And water? He frowned thoughtfully. Well, he'd need a regular source of both plants and lesser animals for the herbivores and carnivores to eat. Could he grow them here in Polaris, or would they need to be shipped from their native habitats? He'll need connections to get all the food where it needs to be.

Oh! And they'd need enrichment, too! He's observed enough of gembound behavior over his five cycles to know anyone'd grow crazy without something to do.

And on, and on, and on...

As his mind contemplated the numerous logistical difficulties in constructing a mega-habitat, his body was doing something else. Collecting pebbles, that is to say. With only a basic grasp on the written word, his main vessel for communicating and storing his thoughts were pictures. He could chart out his life project using these stones, and potentially show it off to anyone interested.
panic attack, ptsd/flashbacking

The Palace’s flowers bent as Pollen drifted her paws at their soft petals. So much of her home’s inner working ran with minute perfection- never did she need to water them, refill their pots or give them feed, but it gave her comfort in that she was doing something potentially good for the whole of those who lived with her.

Except, she hadn’t felt like doing that lately. Scrapes and bruises were evidence of what she had been pushing herself to, cuts that she barely remembered receiving. The dull ache of memory ate at her mind. She should remember, right? Something about the vines that grew deeper every day into her skin, pushing herself to exhaustion to the point she felt it the next morning, faint spots of blood that budded across her chest from a lash of a limb- it all accumulated into a ball of fog that felt too dense to pry into. If she tried, a sense of wrong took over her. It wasn’t a chaotic sort of feeling; she knew what Chaos felt like. This was her own head fighting her, fighting to let her forget.

That wasn’t what haunted her the most. No, it wasn’t the strange way she knew she must be acting, not the way certain thoughts made her retreat into herself and raise that fog as a defense- it was her own face, her own physical presence as opposed to the mental. It’s what she stared at every day when she woke up, staring into the mirror of her room as she got dressed for the day, when she did wake up in her room. It’s what her eye stared at now as it drifted up from the rose she kept on her vanity. Eye. Singular. Her jaw tensed as she shut her eye, head dropping with her overgrown mane falling over her face. The person in her reflection felt like a ghost. It wasn’t her.

But, then again, some part of her latched on to who she saw. It was her, a reflection of what she had gone through, just as the dye on her back helped define the new Pollen.

All of it felt like a lie. Conflicted, Pollen’s nails dragged across the fine wood of the vanity, a low hiss rising through her throat. She barely registered the feel of it on her paws. <t>‘Come on,’</t> her mind echoed, <t>‘keep it together for one day.’</t>

<y>“I don’t know if I can.”</y> Her breath caught in her throat- it wasn’t the first time she talked to herself while she was alone, cycling words, but the act was one of privacy. No one needed to hear her one-sided responses other than herself.

She took a deep breath, glancing up and straightening her spine. <y>“We’ll just be normal for one day. No sulking about how we look.”</y> <t>‘Maybe put on something good,’</t> she continued in her thoughts, turning her body like it was a rigid machine to her dresser.

Her skin felt tingly. She was on the verge of dissociation, she knew it, but she forced her mind forward, her paws to roam over the drawers and filter through pieces of clothing. Finding the right outfit wasn’t hard. She had a blue, thin top in mind, and pairing it with a dull gray of a pair of shorts seemed natural. Once her clothes were changed, she hesitated at seeing her mirror again. Was that her? It felt like a substitute, as though she were some ghost in her own body, even her thoughts warping into something unrecognizable.

A breath of air huffed out of her as she shook her head. She hated thinking about this. It felt like she was at the edge of a cliff, and she was willingly walking herself off the edge, staring down into a deep, watery abyss.

And if she thought too hard about it, she could have sworn another part of her had already dipped far beneath the waves and come back changed by whatever eldritch being awaited her.

Did that make sense? <t>‘Sure,’</t> her mind echoed back, and for a brief second the reassurance worked. Just for a moment. It sunk in after that and a pit in her stomach formed. Her gut twisted along with her lips, her expression souring as she sighed roughly. Talking to herself still was a sign of something- she wasn’t sure what, but it certainly wasn’t a good one. It couldn’t be Chaos, could it? A lingering infection making her delusional? Someone pressing thoughts in her mind through magic?

No. This all felt like it was all her, even if it didn’t feel like Pollen. Maybe it was the dissociation, but she wasn’t Pollen. But, if she wasn’t, then who was she? Her eye hardened again as she turned from her room and let herself out of her door, muscles tense. She had changed so much from that incident. The fog of memories pressed ever further into her as she delved deeper into those mental blocks. Why could she remember more now as she felt different? Caves, she hated all these questions. As she paced down the hall, her hands balled into angry fists as she attempted to just will her brain into silence for once.

It never worked. The impression of want drifted from the back of her head, the need to do her duties in the garden trying to overwrite her desire to practice, just as she did day in and out. At least, when she remembered to. Fine, gardening, that was easy. She knew gardening. You just water the plant and wait for it to grow.

Her mind buzzed with negativity. Was that not enough? Her hand drifted to hold her head briefly, which trailed down into a fake itch at her jaw and neck. She didn’t care if there was more to it. She just wanted to make whatever part of her that needed it happy, like giving attention to a pet or something.

Maybe she needed someone to talk to, she- part of her- realized. She shouldn’t feel so split like this. Her body was meant to be her own, not like two parts of the same brain struggling to comprehend what was happening. The thought was enough to drive her to a stop before an intersection of hallways. It’s not like she wasn’t fully not herself when she wanted to train or think about those old thoughts or be like Aethril.

A frown etched across her face. Is that what this was? Was she just trying to emulate Aethril? Taking a deep breath, Pollen ran her thumbs over the side of her digits, letting the thought sink in. That’s... really what it felt like. Like she’d imposed some make-believe Aethril right in her mind, and she’d parked herself in place and made herself home. She’d occupied Pollen’s body, she’d made her push herself more than she’d like, made her wake up in the middle of doing something else and left her confused and stranded.

It would be a miracle if nobody noticed it, really. Fuck, had they noticed? The anxiety clawed at her throat, and the presence in her mind returned, almost soothing in nature. Normal Gembound weren’t like this. But, she wasn’t normal, was she? She died. The leak of a memory jolted her mind into high alert. The fog scrambled back together hodgepodge, but she remembered the pain, the trauma.

Her body shuddered along with her breath. <t>‘Center yourself. Myself. Calm,’</t> she tried to parse, her mind blending and forgetting who was even existing. She knew how to calm down with deep breaths, but it was hard when the overwhelming thought of her memories compounded with that same fear of unknown entities haunting her waking moments. Clasping her paws over her mouth, she fell back into the wall with a solid thunk and closed her eye. Focus. She had to focus. Focus on somewhere she liked, a place for herself, a place to be comfortable.

Nothing. Her headspace was an empty buzz, filled only with the texture of coarse bark and leaves choking her at her throat.

<t>‘Stop.’</t>

The air caught in her lungs.

<t>‘Stop,’</t> her thoughts pleaded. Pollen’s antlers tapped on the wall as she tipped her head back, sucking in deep gasps of air.

<t>‘Breathe.’</t> Her eye opened, and her muscles dropped as her world shifted. In the back of her mind, whoever she was again, whoever was there before had begun to block herself out from existence, hiding away in a brick fortress of her own design.

Pollen breathed in deeply as she shook out her arms. The physical repercussions of the other’s panic attack lingered in her heartbeat, but she could do her best to center herself, drawing on that headspace and simply existing in it for a moment.

But the real world had duties, and she had to tend a garden to make someone happy.

How could she even tend a garden when she had no memory of it? Her life had been split in two as she worked through the aftermath of His appearance alone, nothing but herself to keep her in isolated company. Yes, there were others there, but- they had been fine, right?

Pollen shook her head. Now’s not the time for introspection. Pollen from before that had shut herself off, so it was time for Pollen from after that to do what she had to. At the very least, she could refill some of the vases, right? Yeah, that sounded right.

Shoving every thought into a hole that she’d revisit later, Pollen meandered around the Palace until she found a pitcher, wandered more until she found water, and finally stepped quietly through the halls as she filled all the vases she spotted. In the back of her mind she was hyper-aware of just how stiffer she walked, her back straight and muscles more tensed with an outward sense of confidence. It was a farce and she knew it. Still, something about it made her feel right- Young Pollen (name pending, she imagined) paced lighter, walked faster with her hands more emotive, always looking at everything. Now, she had a goal. A purpose. It was her’s and her’s alone, and that purpose drove her now to do that work she assigned herself cycles ago.

Or, the her of cycles ago self-assigned it, at least. In any case, it was her job and title. Garden Knight- part of that was gardening, and she’d just have to embrace that.

She barely paid mind to the cleaning lessers within in the Palace. For a moment, she almost made to reach for one but stopped herself short- no, no, they had their jobs, too. Instead, she watched as one darted out to swipe away a splattered drop of water, only to scurry back to its crevice. They never worried about mental states and trauma and stuff, did they? Clenching her jaw, she turned away from the scene and carried on, the pitcher in both paws. Every plant in the Palace was to be accounted for. She lost herself in her work, putting aside distractions to simply just be.

At least it was an easier task to have no thoughts to. Just look for the next vase. Keep watering, keep walking, keep exploring. Don't think about how you don't recognize yourself in your day to day life anymore. Only plants, today. Only plants.

Ruby-Beta picked its way across Pegasus, dragging its large leaf behind it. It was starting to show some wear and tear from the number of times it had been dragged from here to Draco and back again. It glanced at some of the tearing fronds and noted to itself to replace it soon. Now, however, it was carrying a pile of long, dried grass and would have to suffice for this one last trip. Upon reaching the edge of the river, it released the leaf's stem and stepped over to the flat, muddy earth that had served as its workspace for the last few cycles. It was growing hollow with the amount of earth it had scraped away, but it all worked out - it had become an efficient place to mix together the ingredients for mud bricks. A small funnel led straight to the river and moving a large rock allowed it to flow into the hollow - replacing it cut off the flow.

Before doing so, it stalked along the edge of the river, scooping up sand from the edge of the water and tossing it into the hollow until it measured an acceptable amount had been dumped in. Returning to the hollow, it moved to the stone, watching the water pour into the hollow until there was a few good inches pooling on the bottom. And now for the harder work.

Beta replaced the stone and jumped in, stomping around in the mixture of mud, sand, and water, mixing it as good as it good and mashing it together until it was thick and hard to wad through, getting stuck in between its claws and clumping in its fur. It once had hated the feeling of getting wet at all but it had grown used to the sensation.

Once it had deemed the mixture finished, it reached just out of the hollow, grasped the edge of the leaf, and dumped the grass into the mud. It once again took up stomping through the mud, evenly dispersing the fiber and kneading it all together - and there was its recipe for mud bricks.

Many times throughout its work, Beta paused and looked around. It couldn't shake off the feeling that someone...was watching it. It had felt that way ever since entering Pegasus and as it continued working, it felt more and more uneasy. Something was wrong.
There were so many things to see.

The little bird hadn't figured out flight yet. Maybe for some birds it came quickly and more natural, but not for little Vigdis. They hopped their way along beneath the glowing flora of Polaris; it took hours to find his way, not that he really understood where he was going, or why. The only thing he knew was to follow the light that emanated from the larger shrooms, or the trails of glittering dust that danced like constellations in his path.

Eventually the lights faded and he was left in the dark. He didn't like that. It hadn't occurred to the creature yet that the world worked better with others; he hadn't met any others. So far as he could tell, he was alone and that was fine -- because there was no other way to be.

That is, until he found himself in a short corridor with walls that looked considerably different from the stone-hewn terrain he'd spent the past few days exploring. Enough ambient light from Polaris caught against a shard of the wall and sent it reflecting, refracting, throughout.

Everything was a shade of blue or purple -- and as he hopped up to observe the substance, even peck at it, he saw the distorted red gleam of his own legs reflected back. A patch of bright teal on top of his head. Blackness where his wings were tucked. The bird fluffed up his feathers and pirouetted while he appraised himself.
The boracite chrysalis glowed faintly with a radiant chartreuse hue; no doubt it was spoiled by the glowing mushrooms growing out of the wall adjacent, with the ambience shifting the natural blue-white of the material to something more putrescent. The chrysalis was rooted to the ground firmly and ringed by hexagonal stacks of crystal, almost giving the appearance of a nest, of all things.

Inside was a small body, neatly compacted. There was enough room for the creature to turn its head, and the smack of its beak against the inside of the chrysalis reverberated to the back of a very small skull. It didn't hurt, exactly - but it wasn't pleasant. A few more turns like this chipped away at some of the interior.
The bird drew all of its energy and determination to be free, and began to chisel at the interior. The sound was lost behind the thick stone wall and beyond that, the rocky escarpment.
It was shortly after waking up from rest in her quiet nesting corner of Draco that Zoey spotted Labradorite across the cave. It would be incredibly out of character for her to not even say hi, especially in passing if she was headed out to the gardens... Though, today she had been planning on working on more lights, which meant even more possibility of a conversation starting up between them.

Zoey was dreading every moment of this particular conversation. It would have been a lot easier to shut down, to lock it all out-- but a promise was a promise. And now that she had made that promise, she couldn't simply go back on it. Khavur needed her to do this, and she had already dragged her heels enough on it. It was one thing to let it slip by when she didn't see Labradorite, but it wasn't like she could (with a free conscious) avoid them all together.

The thought of it all going wrong <s>like it had with Alpha</s> rang through her mind whenever she stopped to think about it. That was the problem. Thinking. If she could just shut her brain off...

Nope. That wasn't going to happen.

Quills quietly rattling against her chest, she picked up the pace, trotting off toward her sibling. "Labradorite," she called, their name clicking off of her tongue. "How are you?" She struggled to ignore the crawling sensation of the elephant in the room: the thing that she had to fight not to think too deeply about. <s>Did you talk to Alpha?</s>

There were more important things right now. Head up, mandibles pointed in an angle toward the ceiling so her line of sickly yellow eyes could peer up from under her jaws at her sibling. Each breath was calculated, heavy and deep, pushing against the confines of carapace. Would Labradorite immediately pick up on the way her talons dug into the hard stone under foot?

If they did, what would she be able to say?

<s>She was already ruining this.</s> Steady. They could trust Labradorite with this.

Sometimes the absence of something turns out to be its presence from another angle. Sometimes darkness makes an imprint on the mind like light. The space that surrounds an object is just another dimension of the object in that sense. The absence of the voice in Khavur's mind only alluded to the whispers all around it, the whispers of the negative space. Oh, Maximus — they wouldn't know it now, but Khavur understood better that memory they had once shared. You're in its dreams. You're in its thoughts, because you're not in its thoughts. It still talks to you sometimes, more frequently now; picking up a dead end phone and rambling on just to throw its own skull at a brick wall. Because that's what it felt like doing some days. Sometimes you respond, but you don't know that. You never will, at this rate, while you're still hidden away in that rock somewhere—

Still, from what Khavur could gather, not-Maximus-yet was still right. Artificially correct. That just meant Khavur was correct, didn't it? Funny, that. The world must be upside-down. Where once the limb was the extension of the body, the body is now the extension of the limb. Like potatoes?

Some breathing mound of stone lurked outside the entrance to Draco. One could not say it stood Sentinel, nor could it be called Overseeing... but living, existing in this space, and watching, all these it certainly was. At first, Khavur could have walked on past it, jaws stiff and aching for the hunt ahead. But then, with such alarming, bone-breaking speed, it realized: no it could not. The laws of the universe must be changing, because Khavur could not actually take another step forward upon seeing this pile of rocks. No, Khavur could scarcely breathe in its presence, let alone stare or attempt to process. The world... the world must be imploding, and exploding, at the very same time. Keeping it at a perfect, violent, erupting stagnation.

One tree and one boulder, one fresh and one old, and one says to the other in nothing short of anticlimactic disbelief: <spk>"...Overseer?"</spk> And the world changes energy levels, destroying everything of its former self while still nothing truly moves. Not with a bang, but a whimper. It's not so dramatic, calm down. You're ruining the joke.

So, she'd eaten too much.

Eridanus was akin to a buffet table, really, if you had never seen an actual buffet table before in your life. Colourful fruit and berries and things hung from trees to sat nestled in bushes between the ferns. Niamh had gone around trying every single one: bright, yellow-orange mangoes and tangy dark-pink strawberries. Some, she had discovered, had skin she had to peel off: tangerines were nestled in a ball of leather-like skin, but easy to eat and carry around once they were free of it.

Not all of them were good, even then. Pomegranates were intensely difficult to open and weren't all that worth it: the strange little ball-berries inside had an odd texture to them, and the colour made Niamh... uncomfortable, in some way she couldn't describe. Melons, Niamh couldn't even open-- and the one pineapple she found hurt to even hold in her hands, albeit minutely.

So, she ate everything good. She liked the sweetest fruits the best, and her favourite was one red-orange apple she found that crunched when she bit into it. It was halfway through eating a handful of blueberries, however, that the tummy ache started.

Hands sticky, belly too full, the faun lay face-down in the moss.

You know. As you do.

Now, this wasn't the first time Niamh had overeaten. She had yoinked some cooked meat from some strange hut in the middle of Cepheus that was empty, and took it back to her tree to eat. That must have been for several people, because she fell almost comatose after finishing most of it and having a tummy ache. Napping was the cure-all to this ailment, with one issue.

Her limbs jittered. Her head spun. There was so much... sugar in her system that she was practically vibrating on the floor of Eridanus with her eyes wide open, no matter how hard she tried to turn her brain off and sleep. Her legs wanted to run, and her belly wanted to go back to her chrysalis.

Niamh rolled over onto her back, simultaneously exhausted and the most awake she'd ever been. What a horrible predicament.
</pmod>

The pale remains of her chrysalis sat at the base of the hill.

It had been several days, now, since she came out. The solid agate lay in pieces, littered with white petals bathed in Voidlight from strange, black crystals above. Where some might abandon their rock without a second thought, Niamh liked to visit on occasion-- not for any particularly profound reason, or to question existence as a whole, but for the tree.

She could always see it from where the chrysalis used to stand-- it stood tall atop the hill, covered in pretty pale flowers, surrounded by a blanket of petals like snow. Niamh liked to run back and froth through the silky blossoms, cloven hooves kicking up large plumes of litter into the air to scatter like dust. She'd roll in them, sometimes, too-- and she'd spend too much time picking little pinprick petals from her hair afterwards.

Today, though, the faun's eyes were set on the tree itself, rather than the litter it produced. Instead of skipping through an ankle-deep sea of white, she went for skittering around the trunk of the tree until she found the lowest branch. She ran, she jumped-- her hooves scratched against the bark, until her little hands caught it.

She affixed herself up there with some flailing and <spk>"wah"</spk>-ing before one blush leg was flung over the branch, and she sat with her belly to the wood, slowly snaking forward. The branch bent, even under her little weight.

No, that probably wasn't good... Her head craned upwards to the stronger, thicker branches up above as the platform she was on continued to curve dangerously underneath her.

<finedandy>
Despite all that'd occurred not too long ago, the monstrous hybrid returned to self-isolation; the thought of initiating, of feeling a greeting pass between its own crooked teeth sent roils of revulsion through its body. It always tasted the coppery tang of blood on its tongue when the idea bloomed into mind, and its head swarmed with TV snow—but, that was fine. It could hunt well enough, it could listen as the Sentinel talked at it and it never found the words or will to respond. It could watch and it could learn.

An unfortunate effect of its observations was that Orthoclase-Alpha had become quite skilled in the art of avoiding people.

Putrescent eyes stared and they observed; and so, Alpha knew the comings and goings of the Forge. It knew when they might yawn awake, head to whatever assignment was theirs for the day, return for rest and relaxation. It could mentally categorize those that clustered together, when their tasks alternated with the passing of the days.

With this information in mind, it could be tactical about when it decided to watch Tunnel G swell only with the lives of monsters, or when it braved the fields of Pegasus to return with rabbits in tow—having only eaten those that'd decay too quickly to bring back, spitting out their stones when it was done. It could dodge catching a flash of amaranthine carapace in the corners of its eyes, the gooey-warm lights that accompanied such a sight.

It could live out the rest of its days as a ghost.

It might be a failure to not try at all, but... Orthoclase-Alpha promised itself that it might be better like this: depositing a mouthful of dust-covered rabbits dug up from earlier hunts. Some were far more intact than others, but... it was sloppy. Getting better. Rusty. Still hardly able to stomach the idea that it did need to eat, and that rabbits were a perfectly edible item.

The monstrous hybrid, crouched down to make the deposit as quiet as possible, glared into the nearest Lesser's glassed-over eye. It blinked—to no response from the dead little beast with its neck utterly crushed—and stood with a sharp rattle of its quills. Putrid eyes slipped to either side of it—it shouldn't be noticed at all, it could go back to Pegasus—and it shook itself out before making to make its hasty retreat.
</finedandy>
