There is a certain unease that comes with something that looks living, should be living, and yet is not. The frozen caricature at the entrance stares down at him like he has done something oh so terrible, like he has caused one great upheaval of everything moral and decent, and the look is so familiar—so ingrained—that it is then that the pangolin knows for certain that it is not the first. It is a face only a living thing could make. Too many curves and edges. Too living, even in its unlife. “...Oh, dear. How do, old boy?” It stares on, unblinking. “Goodness, me. What a ghastly thing you are.”
He hopes it was not rude. It was not rude coming out of the mouth, really. It was only an observation. And what a broad observation to make, because whatever this thing was, or is, proves to be quite unlike anything the young gembound has ever seen before.
It was carved from the earth itself. That is a feat surely reserved for the living—taking such a thing and changing it irreparably. There was nothing one could do about such a sight but admire it, and admire it the pangolin did. Chipped stone and all, the thing stood so proudly atop its plinth that the bowl in its claws almost seemed like a—
Oh, what could he say for it? A treasure? But the pangolin did not know what treasure truly meant, either.
-–Like a treasure. Because it feels right. Because the meaning did not matter, not really. All that mattered was the protection, the stationary care. He did not know what having treasure felt like, but surely it felt like this.
Holding it outward. Here, it said. Here it is. Now, it is your turn.
Your turn. But he did not have much to give, except—
Except perhaps the last vestiges of its organic form. What better gift to give than a piece of you, repurposed? An unbeating heart in the cup of its hands. Giving back. Letting by. A respect. Now that was good manners.
Well! A fare is in order, he thinks! A fare for—
A fare for travel. A fare for respect, whatever it may be. Thank you, he says back to it. Thank you for your pity. “All is fare in love and war. That is what the people say, is it not? Heard it before, have you?.” He sniffles. “Ah, bother.”
And so, gently taking a rock in his tail, he brings it up and throws. It almost bounces off the smooth casing, yet another taunt, but it rattles around until it settles between one of its claws and the held urn. “Delightful. Delightful! May I pass?” It may be a tad boorish, but he says it as he walks away, tail dragging. “You have had your treasure! And my fare! My fair fare, say. Mind how you go, stranger!”
Like the tunnel, it does not respond, and for once the pangolin is not too offended at the gesture. He would not be too amenable himself if he was made of stone. No way to relieve itches. No way to talk. And that notion is scary enough to garner the most earnest of his condolences. And he does offer those condolences, his rickety voice echoing, but when the flat stone leads into towering engravings, that is when they run out.
Mosaics–beautiful, overlapping abstractions—are inscribed into every surface above him, and yes, these must be the stars he saw beneath his eyelids. They do exist! And they were horrifying.
Artificial. Made. The pangolin pales at this—they were made! Recondite shapes and colours fan out to form the quills and feathers and paws and crests and tails of beasts he cannot even hope to name, and sitting atop a perch of sweeping bone and sinew sits the most empyrean thing, a creature of wings and cloven hooves and those eyes---three uncanny abysses staring back—and there is a majesty there even then, in the simplicity, for the pangolin cannot imagine what pressure it would be, three eyes and nowhere to put them. And there were more—the twisting, many-legged forms of insectoid, bovine monstrosities with flaring nostrils and frightened eyes. The scratched and smudged things of scales and lumpy, spine-stretched skins. In every direction and then some sat beings that stitched every biological impossibility together and spat it back out. Nestled in crooks and crannies were things so simple and things so needlessly convoluted. Against the ragged canvas of Monoceros’ tunnel laid the good and bad and left and right. And encircling were the culminations, named and unnamed and horribly secretive and graciously honest. Above him, everything that has ever existed, and yet, should not have. Above him sits the firsts.
It is, likely, the scariest and yet most fascinating thing the pangolin has ever seen, and by the time he has made it a mere thirty feet into the tunnel, he is already waving himself about and flinching at how the whipping wind, from such places, sounds like their growls and brays and yelps. Because he may have manners, but he by no means a courageous thing. And so there the poor, meek, unseemly little pangolin sits, choking on his own tremors. There the poor, weak, unassuming, scared little pangolin stays.
For the firsts could not always be the firsts.
And he has come along.
The memory of Hume still lingered at the forefront of her brain, whenever a moment grew quiet or alone she found her mind drifting to the wisteria trees, to the gentle pink-gold light, the cosmic glittering of wings. She wanted to, at least, carry a little bit of that with her. And she had an idea how.
Setting off into Andromeda, she began a familiar search through nooks and crannies, into the cracks of the stone walls, wedges between boulders, anywhere where stones and crystals might have found themselves lost.

Eventually, she found, nestled in some pebbles, a nice, beautifully bright carnelian. That would do nicely. She slipped it into the pouch around her neck and continued forward.

Doru was sitting down, holding the living stone of teal tourmaline in a golden-clawed hand. He had found in the cave full of echoes, when he was young still, and he had decided to take it with him. Judging by the area he had found it in, it was likely a Mystfox's stone.

He tilted the gemstone, watching the way light bounced off of it. He did not truly want to raise a child, he thought. Children sounded tiresome, much like family. A part of him wished he was not a lone wanderer, but he did not want the annoyance of family to solve that.

But he wanted to create, to give life, even if he did not want to raise that life himself. But he did not want the child he created to die, either, he wanted it to live. Not out of fondness, but out of curiosity. He could give it to the Hive, perhaps, but he did not think a war against the caves suited a lifespan reaching adulthood either.

No, he needed a different solution. Doru sighed.

And then there was the matter of siblings, which his parents had insisted were important. But Doru disagreed. Two of his siblings had never even hatched, and Bez had left, not that Doru blamed him for doing so. Family was annoying, he agreed.

So, perhaps siblings were not important for companionship, a thing not guaranteed, but for successful hatching likelihood? But this life would be strong, he felt. He thought it would hatch.

Maybe it didn't need siblings, but it did need a caretaker.

Ember had, instead, been working his forge: cleaning it up a bit, bringing in fresh materials he'd been gathering, and overall focusing on various tasks he assigned himself to keep busy. He wanted to get back to smithing, to enchanting what he made, too. But he'd been sleeping, mostly, lazing the days away, unable to help himself when basking in warm sun. More often than not, he wasn't here. He'd spent time in Monoceros, or even take a few days to soak up the rays in Leo.

Heat was nice.

He'd had this sort of thought in mind when he'd picked up the sharp chunk of Obsidian. It wasn't all that large, but its flat shine had interested him, so he'd bundled it in with the other abandoned bits of gemstone that he'd found and brought it back under the mental tickbox of "jewelry materials."

Maybe it could be shaped, polished, and fitted into the pommel of a sword. Or maybe it could be formed into the focal piece of a ring or necklace. He'd been turning it over in one almost-thumbed, clawed hand, and then felt a bit of regret that it couldn't be more. Just a little piece of rock: not something that would come to life. Not something like another Gemb<thk>Oh.</thk> The spark had come so unexpectedly: a flicker of magicka from he to the rock, and <spk>"...Oh no,"</spk> he breathed, eyes widening.

Not that it was a bad thing he'd accidentally just granted life to what he'd assumed would be a necklace, and not a child.
But... he hadn't planned for this, that's all.
<spk>"I gotta find Dad-!"</spk> Either dad would do... anyone who'd know more about how to handle this than he would. He'd only ever raised one child. He absolutely still did not feel prepared for another.
He ensured it was safely tucked away, hidden from prying eyes, and then took wing: flailing and flapping away in a panic, even as the obsidian began to fuse to the rock behind him.
Asira was soon old enough to venture further out into Orion as she built up her stamina. Her paws were weary by the time she arrived at the center of the cave, the building looming before her. Small in comparison to the sheer size of the structure, it invoked a sense of awe. Would she be that big one day? Just like Cadenza! Finding an entrance, she made her way within. The circular space was perfect for practicing, enclosed, but not overly so.
To warm up, she could start out with a small, simple spell. It wasn't particularly useful just yet, but she was working on it. Asira focused her gaze on a lone pebble. She stared hard, very hard. But that tingly feeling did not arise.

It was done growing, now, and the shell had slowly begun to weaken as the neonate inside began to stir. There was a faint tremble within and then a moment passed. Another shiver before the loud cracking of stone fracturing echoed and bounced over the barren stone walls.

And then it broke open and the calf was deposited onto a bed of broken bones and rock, gasping in its first, dusty breath. Gray and gold eyes flickered open as it scrambled to right itself, confusion clouding its newly awakening mind. It was wet all over and shivering from the chilly, dry air that seemed to penetrate like needles through the thin layer of fuz over its body. Legs like sticks managed to right themselves beneath its body and it stood shakily, adrenaline of its first moments beginning to slowly pass as it stood there among the debris, alone, confused, and a little bit afraid.

Nemean sighed heavily, leaning back in her tiny chair. Said chair was duct-taped to the head of Chadsworthington Stevenson the Third, and it may or may not have blinded the golem from seeing where it was going. Probably not, since it was just made of rocks, and Nemean didn't care anyway.

"Hardly anybody SHOWED UP," she complained, loudly. (This was the third time in five minutes.) "All that work GLUING HATS TO BEES and nobody showed up." A glance at Isra told her that the room guardian was looking for a polite answer, and Nemean threw up her hands again. "COME ON, that was genius! Ugh. Nobody appreciates me here." She turned, plucking up three small cards in their envelopes and turning them this way and that. "'Acheron,' you said, right? And Lorelei. And... ugh. Imp. FINE. He's still a shit, though." She handed them to Isra, who fought back a smirk.

"The bees looked... ahh, fantastic. I'll see these sent out. Nedies has a soup on, if you'd like?" she suggested gently.

But Nemean didn't hear her. The fairy's legs were crossed, and the higher-up foot was bobbing rapidly, her face pursed in thought. "You know what-?" The thoughtful expression eased into a grin, and Isra suppressed an 'uh oh.' "Obviously they don't get rewards now. But if they still want something they can fish it outta the damn beehives! Tell them THAT!" She burst into laughter, flitting up from her chair, buzzing into the air with a small trail of stardust.

Chadsworthington Stevenson the Third spun in a slow, confused circle below her. "I gotta go make preparations."

"...Are you going to go stick things into beehives-?" Isra asked, staring at her with bemusement.

"No! I mean, yes, but more complicated than that! -Yes, really. Shut up." She paused, bobbing in the air. "I'll call it TRICK or TREAT!"

Isra coughed politely. "I think that's taken. For the, ah, autumn holiday." She was trying not to laugh, again, being overly proper and kind, and Nemean scowled and pointed a tiny finger at her.

"It's--that's--...FINE! I'll call it... BEEWARE!" She spread her hands through the air, the word appearing before her in a huge golden sparkle of light before falling away. Isra started laughing.

"I like it. I'll get the thank you cards sent out. And the invitations for 'BEEWARE.' Have fun; I'll have some drinks ready if you want, when you get back."

"Bet your ass I will," the fairy muttered, spinning off into the fields.
For those who cannot read, there is a crudely drawn set of instructions at the bottom. It includes a possibly confusing drawing of an audience crossed out in front of a theatre, then paw-hands fishing around in a beehive, which splits with arrows pointing to two other images: a shining treasure, and swollen, stung paws.

For April Fool's 2024, which will run until April 7th, characters may post attempting to search beehives (of Rainbow Bumblebugs or Oily Bumblebugs) for treasure. Any roll type may be used. A Failure or Crit Fail will result in bee stings. These hurt but are not dangerous, but the bees will chase the character away from the hive for one day before they can try again.

A Success should be GM tagged for a treasure roll.

All participants, regardless of rolls, may then post in Update Me to claim either Fool Feet or Fabulous Banana.
Although the Cepheus Palace was not Momma Bolormaa's first or even last choice for an event venue, here she was, accompanying the chittering sprite with a glum slouch to her walk.

"AND THEN!" Nemean was saying, fluttering clumsily through the hallways with her arms reaching toward the ceiling. She was talking with words, but a lot of it was very much her arms and hands, too. "They get introduced to these bees, right? And they have to pair them up! But they can totally get it wrong!" A tiny hand slapped her knee as she laughed.

Isra nodded with a hum, fiery eyes sliding to view Momma Bolormaa. "And you agreed to this?"

But Momma Bolormaa didn't get a chance to answer.

"OF COURSE SHE DID," blurted Nemean, summoning a rolled scroll with a puff of glitter. It was small, too small for Isra to read, but Nemean unrolled it and pointed to each word as she read: "'And I agree to sign away my rights for my event, in which I will get to participate as an audience member only.'" She let the scroll snap shut and it vanished in a flash of light. Nemean crossed her arms and nodded sagely.

While still looking at Momma Bolormaa, Isra simply said, "I see." It was clear to her that Nemean had absolutely conned one of the nicest creatures known to the gembounds. A shame, but it was not her business. "If you need anything around the palace while you're here, please let me or Eggbert know."

Trailing slightly behind them with as quick of a waddle as he could manage, Eggbert chirped reassuringly.

Momma Bolormaa only nodded, still trying to figure out how it had possibly come to this. They were in the palace to do some preparations, but she had been informed that there would be a live audience in the Forum of Orion, and that the entire thing would be more spectacle than... She sighed. She had just wanted to find good pairs for her bees and thought the gembounds certainly could help. But now?

"Anyway, I got lots of little accessories made for them," Nemean had continued, breaking Momma Bolormaa from her thoughts. "This is going to BEE GREAT!"
At the Forum, Nemean was overseeing the completion of a large screen with four sides that had been hoisted in the air at the center of the ring, so that spectators in the seats could all see the events of whatever was being shown. By now, she was hoping many of the audience members would begin filling into their seats.

Prepped and waiting for the show to start, carnival imps had been employed to walk the stairs offering concessions: hot dogs, popcorn, drinks, and a variety of other snacks. In a booth with comfortable seating, Momma Bolormaa and Eggbert also waited for things to start. The little butler was doing his best to keep Momma Bolormaa in high spirits and she appreciated his presence, but still, her heart hurt at the knowledge that her beloved bees were turned into a drama for sport.

"BEELOVED BEES," echoed Nemean, as if she could read the creature's thoughts. The sprite was welcoming a cart wheeled into the center of the Forum on which the bees were stationed cutely in little doll-house-sized rooms, her arms spread open in a grand gesture. "Let's get ready to BEE introduced!" She flitted to each room to double-check their accessories before flying over to imps operating a table of gadgets. Everything was in place and ready to go!

She snapped her fingers and the screen sparked to life with loud, chirpy music accompanying a cheesy introduction video that displayed portraits of each bee before it settled on the title: 14 Day Beeancé!

"HELLO AND WELCOME TO ALL OF YOU BEE-UTIFUL MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE!" boomed her voice over the speakers. Nemean was floating around the bee house in a circle, the camera following her to display her on the screen. "Today we are going to play 14 Day Beeancé, where it will BEE up to you to match these lonely bees into pairs! Those foxy imps will be coming around to give you all voting buttons and snacks, and as we get into the show, you will all vote together on who to match with whom!" Her explanation was accompanied by goofy cartoon graphics on the screen.

"BEEfore we get started, let's all give a round of applause for MOMMA BOLORMAAAAAA," rang her voice as she spread an arm toward the VIP viewing box, the camera zooming in on it: Eggbert waved his broad tail but Momma Bolormaa only gave a small, shy nod. "Without her, this would not BEE possible!" Nemean clapped her tiny hands together as the camera focused back on her. "ALRIGHT, LET'S MEET OUR BEES!"

The speakers began playing the joyful music theme again as profiles of the bees started to be displayed on the screen. (View bee profiles here.)

The hot pink stone that had gradually swollen with life was a stark slash of blinding color in this otherwise forbidding tunnel. The shadows that gathered here were nothing compared to those in the voidlight a hundred yards off, past the Door, and the corundum was more like an open wound (or a boil) than anything dark or sinister.

She didn't know that, of course. She knew she'd been content in sleeping, or... probably so. She was waking, now, but it was warm, comfortable, and she couldn't remember not having been content, at least. It was a little tight, though, and now and then she stretched or flexed in a half-conscious manner, pressing against the thinned shell around her.

She flexed and turned, and yawned in the dark, lungs still filled with fluid. But it was all still tight around her. She needed more room. When flexing and pushing didn't do it, she sought another power. It came, though she had no idea what it was: a spark from the chunk of stone that had broken free from her shell, but was still firmly bound to her spine. It flared outward, curling into the foliage around the stone. Vines slithered over the chrysalis, squeezing, and a branch of some nearby tree prodded and scraped at the surface. After a few moments one or the other broke through, the released plants sliding back to where they belonged as the gemstone cracked away.

The child tumbled out: a large butterball of a beast, spiky and slicked dark with wet as she coughed and shivered. She hadn't known it was going to be cold! And what was this, anyway? Four eyes opened, squinting a rosy glow as she peered around her.

Nope. This wasn't the inside of a rock anymore.
...Sunlight peeks through from the canopy of trees, shining on a particularly animated little rock. It shakes and stirs - almost as if something is underneath. Then, without warning, CRACK ! First two little paws emerge, then a tiny head follows suit. The creature probes the air with its nose, and takes in the musky scent of the environment - it isn't quite sure what to make of it, though...

Hyde groggily emerges from his stone, and blinks his beady little eyes. He is rather dazed and confused, not quite able to get a grasp on his surroundings. Everything is blurry, and a loud ringing clogs his hearing. What...This ? Hyde flexes a paw, and his two hind legs kick against his will. Definitely gonna take some getting used to those... He drags himself across the mossy floor, covering himself in the earthy scents. A feeble attempt at a crawl, that's for sure. Hyde opens his tiny maws, and gurgles softly. Frustrated, he tries again to communicate his thoughts; however, yet another babble emerges. Seems that this too will take some getting to used to. Hyde shifts his focus to his vision, for he begins to squint in hopes it will clarify his sights. No luck there either... Being a newborn sure is hard work, isn't it ? Well, at least the ringing in his ears had since died down. That's at least one thing to be glad about. Think positive, right ?

They'd gone after Reverend in the end- equal parts curious as to who they are, and determined to get started on the task they'd gotten - and are only partially regretting pursuing the panicking other into Canis.

The bones make something shiver up their spine, and the fungal mat coating parts of the cave makes their hackles spike.

No, they're not a fan of this cave, nor of what ghosts it's held onto since times immemorial.
But they aren't looking for ghosts- they're looking for Reverend. A... pale gembound in a pale room. Hm.
They try and flare their magic, making the spots along their spine and the tentacles on their tail flare with an eerie light.. if the lights allow. Maybe Reverend can see THEM. Make things easier

Some time after leaving for the swamps, Wilder came soaring towards the place where the Merchant was waiting, astral wings shimmering under the lights of Hydra. She landed in the warm sands, the feathers drifting off into cosmic dust as she strode forward. The white cape that she had received from Tenzin was no longer white, now covered in mud and sand, just as she was, and still tied around her in a way that created a pouch under her belly. From this pouch, she pulled out a number of crystals and offered them to the Merchant without a word - a lumpy piece of charoite, a flat and round piece of hanksite, a yellow cat's eye, and a smoky quartz point. The petalite she kept with her, alongside the nonmagical spessartite.

She felt a jolt of sadness pass through her as she handed the stones off to the Merchant, knowing that they would be destroyed, the potential in them wiped away. She thought of the petalite and the vision and wondered if any of them had similar stories. Fallen to protect another or leaving behind someone they loved.

She gulped and averted her eyes, instead focusing on the crystal. No more finding gemstones - she wasn't doing that anymore. It wasn't right. But she could offer a bit of herself, her own potential. Because that, at least, had a far larger supply and could be offered more. It didn't come to her at first, too frazzled by the experiences she'd just had in the swamp, and she wondered if the Merchant was watching.

...Did she even care if he was?
