I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun

Her paw was about to crest the edge of the chest's lip when it suddenly grew teeth and turned into...not a chest. She shrieked and fell backwards, narrowly avoiding anything more then a scratch and a sudden bash in the chest as the mimic jumped to life. She stumbled back, stunning, but quickly recovered as the room burst into chaos. A less fortunate member of their little adventuring party had unfortunately not gotten out of the way in time, and without really thinking about it, Callista lunged forward to help.

She reached a paw for the lid of the mimic, to try and magically force the mouth open, but just as she did so, it snapped forward. With a cry, she found herself falling headfirst into the chest, which banged closed behind her, losing a bit of fur and skin to the sharp teeth as she did so.

That my life would depend on the evening moon
That the night would never comе

He watched in horror as the chest suddenly opened its jaws and swallowed a creature right in front of him. Everyone around him acted quickly and he did as well, rushing forward just as they barely seemed to slip out of the maw of the mimic. Get back. He called out to the creature that had almost gotten eaten, aiming to move in front of them. Take your time to rest and recompose yourself.

He was still rather small for his species, but still a decently sized bundle of muscle and fluff, born to protect those around him. And so, he would aim to set himself up, ready to block an upcoming attack and protect Spark until they were able to join the fight again, if they wanted to. Otherwise he had no issues with protecting them if they needed it.

@Spark

So fraught with deception this dungeon had been so far, Halcyon should've guessed even supposed safe havens could turn out to be anything but. These very chests harboring the possibility of revealing themselves as dangers too wasn't an entire surprise. After all, nothing prevented them from being rigged with traps for grasping fingers to activate. The discovery that the largest of their number was in fact a living creature, however, pierced through the Drone's usually unflappable demeanor. Soon as the chaos broke out, they snatched their hand away from the interior of the slightly less tempting chest they'd been perusing should the lip of its lid sprout teeth and chomp down on it. Claws then grasped at the silk bag against their thigh and rummaged for the ammunition within. They backed towards the doorway they'd entered from, settling a rough stone into their staff's leather sling. Not once did their gaze leave the rampaging mimic, a wariness settling within it as the disturbing tentacled creature left no side of the room untrampled.

Lingering here wasn't ideal. Inevitably they'd be faced by that gaping maw full of teeth, victims, and riches. Running, though, reduced the chance of a steady shot against their adversary. Standing like helpless, easy prey would be necessary if they wished to inflict a precise and effective blow. Therefore, despite nagging self-preservation, they remained rooted to the spot until those mighty jaws came close to them at last.

They inhaled, adjusted the two-handed grip upon their staff, and stepped forward with a downward swing. Air whooshed by their head as their projectile flew to its mark. Most mouths had sensitive spots to hit. If they targeted the right area, those too weak or slow to evade capture might be ejected by a wounded monstrosity unable to properly swallow.

Oh, we're doing this now.

Lost in the search, Angel had been mostly focused on the coins, still rolling the one in their mouth. The snap pulled them out of it, had them twisting to see what was going on. Right. Traps. Unaffected by any sense of urgency, Angel only stood up, gathered themself, and hissed under their breath.

Well. They had to take care of this. Angel took a moment to gather themself up, right before launching themself towards the mimic, unsure of where to start but still willing to do something. They aimed to tear wood away- but in doing so their hands got far too close to its mouth and slipped in for a minute and--

They snarled in pain when the armor of their arm was pressurized between the hinge. Teeth scraped on iron, and they wheeled back, suddenly not so sure of any of their plans, actually. That hurt. It left their bracer slightly dented and scratched, and they coddled their arm as they shied away from the action while waiting for the pain to cool.
Despite her early caution, she was caught utterly off guard as she chest revealed its true predatory form. Her fault for relaxing for a single moment, she supposes. She is knocked to the side by a body-slam that leaves her breathless for a moment.

Mai has absolutely no experience with combat, but what else is she supposed to do, just let it eat everyone here?

She attempted to rear back and kick at its tentacles with her sharp hind hooves, but the moment she does it smacks her with another one of its tentacles, knocking her off balance and sending her sprawling into the treasure.

Thalia froze up for a moment, which wasn't hard since she was moving in a molasses-like field.

She sprang back belatedly, but it was like a slow-motion jump compared to the swift motion all around her. She flinched, thinking fast. Or... slow, comparatively, as the case may be--Wait. I CAN USE THIS.

She swore and grit her teeth, and pushed forward, trying to leap for the Mimic. She could slow it! Maybe! The damn flute--it'd slowed her and Menkheperre both. Maybe she could jump onto the Mimic, and slow it down for the others? Sure, they'd slow down if they got close, but ranged attackers, magic--could she give them an advantage? Help them to survive?

Spark tumbled out, violently lost from the snapping jaws. The rampaging mimic slammed Zephiran aside as it bounced forward. Angel and Mai followed suit, tossed aside.

Others were not so lucky.

Menkheperre, despite his great size, vanished. Snapped up by the interior, those hair-tufts falling away as the chest bounced on its tentacles toward the others--and there went Callista, consumed into the internals as well. Surely there wasn't much space left inside; it'd be a tight fit, with the treasure and both Gembounds crammed within.

Yew's bite found only hard wood, barely causing dents. V-Chaos-Eleven, on the other hand, chomped down on one of its tentacles--making it stagger as the disgusting flesh SEVERED from the body. Chaos-Eleven would be left with a writhing, detached limb dying in her maw. Disgusting. (Or delicious?)

An open maw met a swinging staff, courtesy of Halcyon, and the chest--flinched. Did it feel pain-?

Thalia's attempt was successful, insofar as the Mimic suddenly seemed to slow to those not standing close to it... or inside of it. Maybe it'd be easier to attack or to avoid. Still, it was a mass of snapping, heavy wood and metal,

But... it had a weakness. As the mimic rampaged, albeit slowed and injured, it staggered further. One of its hinges, at the rear, popped and flailed, loose. Could that be leveraged, somehow..?

Chomping Chest

Characters may roll to attack, or for those swallowed by the Mimic, roll to attempt escape.

Failures will be again hurt by its rampage--or, if already swallowed, will start to be seriously battered by the heavier treasures within the chest (is this how it digests its food...?).

Critical Failures will be swallowed, or if already swallowed, will lose consciousness inside the Mimic.

The next post will take place on July 15th in the afternoon/evening GMT.

Characters who missed last round (Fleas, Mai and Audland) should be posted to make up for last round before being posted for this one.

Audland did not find what he was looking for in his gluttonous search for more delicious suitable treasure, but through his searching he was just barely made aware of the fact that things in this room were not as they seemed. Something was moving. Something... oh.

What in tarnation was that mockerous insult to all treasurekind?

Audland yelped and stumbled back, away from the rampaging beast that was now trying to chomp at various party members. It missed him by a hair. He watched one escape, then several take their place, including—oh dear god try not to laugh—that twiggy nerdy Valkdragon with the stupid light orb. It seems his magic was failing him again, and this time it wasn't Audland who needed to make him miserable for it. Audland could laugh though. And he did laugh, quite boisterously, probably much to poor Menkheperre's chagrin.

But, as fun as it was to frolic through the fields of shoving nerds against lockers, now was unfortunately not really the time. Audland would try to cut himself short, compose himself—get up, and inspect the creature from a safe distance.

OOC: Catchup #1 - auddie try not to laugh challenge difficulty impossible

While the beast continued its ravenous flailing and hopping about, Audland managed to avoid it and, in the process, catch a glimpse of its loose hinge. Audland thought for a moment; it needed its hinges intact in order to use its jaws. Like any creature with a mouth, he supposed, if the mechanism was broken then it would make them unable to chew. How the anatomy of a living wooden chest worked was an enigma to Audland, so it was truly unclear whether or not picking at a loose hinge would mean anything.

Hey, wait a minute—wood? Was this creature made of real wood? At the thought, as if in response, Audland felt the beginnings of a painful sear tear across his own flesh. Wood, metal, or flesh—the material didn't matter, Audland's fire could burn it all. He let the fire come.

And for a moment it did grow, far too rapidly, crawling up his arm like a virus making him grimace and try (and fail) to hold in a scream of pain. It then fizzled out abruptly and immediately after the display, just in time to be completely useless to defend Audland from the mimic that was now rapidly approaching him, drawn directly to his location by his strangled screams. Perhaps Audland's fault for ever thinking that the fire was truly his.

Curse his stupid yaoi magic. This is why Betsy was his new best friend—

Aaaand in the mouth he went. Ah, well, perhaps it was better for the mimic to try swallowing far more than it could chew. Especially if what it wanted to overload itself with was effectively a giant ticking time bomb of chaos fire death. Heh.

OOC: Attempted to attack weak spot. Got et (eaten) instead. Yum!

What should have been a chest of jewel and coin turned into a fight that was going to end badly if they didn't do something about it soon.

For some time, he simply was a body shield for Spark, using that time to watch and analyze before his eyes widened slightly when he noticed the hinge.

Perfect.

Lunging forward, he would attempt to wrap his jaws around it and yank backwards with as much force as he could possibly muster, trying to yank the hinge off the creature, or at least break it some more.
