Gypsy was shocked.

As the “kind” stranger, who had turned out to be actually horribly mean, departed, she was left standing with her beak hanging open. How could this be? How could someone act so nice and lovely, and then do a complete turn around like that?! It was cruel.

And the things he had said! That she was weak and tiny? And useless, to top it all off? She looked at the rock slab, now moved to the position she had wanted it to be. She felt no elation whatsoever. Only stupid, for being tricked.

A lump rose in her throat and her vision blurred. Water welled up from her eyes and leaked down. Some of it got caught inside her mask, making her feel uncomfortable. She hiccuped in dismay. She wasn’t sure what was happening to her.

“I feel…” What was this painful emotion? It was her first time feeling this way, and she hated it.

Apple frowned. That was quite rude. She didn't think she was weird, she just liked to laugh. That thing was weird, with a strange scaly body and odd looking wings. He didn't realize he was the odd one out? Strange.

However, she didn't feel too hurt by it. If he wanted to be rude, he could go ahead and be rude. Fuck him. She didn't need to talk to anyone that was just going to be mean. However, the smaller bird seemed pretty put off by his mean words. Apple fluttered down and noticed the tears that were building in her eyes. She leaned down to catch her gaze. "Are you okay? Was he being mean to you? I mean, you didn't really think that you could move the rock, right? Being so small and all?"

She didn't mean to be rude as well, she was just being honest. She hadn't thought at all that she could move this rock and she didn't think the bird would have thought of it either.

"Are you okay? Was he being mean to you? I mean, you didn't really think that you could move the rock, right? Being so small and all?"

Tears continued to leak down Gypsy’s face. At the other bird’s words, she sobbed loudly.

“H-He tricked me!” The youngster bawled. “And why not?! Why wouldn’t I be able to move the rock just as well as he could?” Uncertainty nagged at her, particularly at what Imp had said. “Is it true?” She turned her doleful, watery eyes to the magpie. “Are we really useless because we are birds?”

She hiccuped. “I just wanted to create something… but I couldn’t even do such a simple task! I-I want to grow bigger, and stronger! But h-how?!”

Apple shook her head. The bird really did believe that she could have moved the rock. She had no idea that they would be so ignorant. "I mean, he is a lot bigger then you. Of course he would be stronger. And meaner. Big things are probably always meaner to the little guys like us. But that doesn't make us useless!"

She puffed out her chest and hopped backwards. "We'll find what we can do better then him! We're both new and we're both bird and we can do what he can't! Just because we're not as big and strong and mean as him doesn't mean we can't do anything."

She blinked curiously at her words of creating. Was the stone somehow going to be made into something? She had never seen anyone ever do the art that Gypsy would do. She was curious to know what she meant. "Oooo, create something? I'd like to see that!"

"Oooo, create something? I'd like to see that!"

Gypsy sniffed. “Yeah… I wanted to create a building of my own with stones, like those ones over there!” She pointed with her wing at the crumbling structures that scattered the area below, and then at the pile of small quartz and stones she had gathered earlier. The magpie’s interest in her work and her uplifting words made the tiny avian feel better.

“Th-Thanks,” she murmured. She blinked her eyes dry of tears. “I appreciate that. I’m Gypsy by the way, what’s your name?”

Even though the magpie had laughed and teased her initially, she realised the Gembound had just been honest. Unlike a certain other horrible gembound. She felt a grim determination set in. Next time she saw him, she was going to prove to him just how strong, tough and capable she was!

“Hmm,” she thought out aloud. “I wonder what I could do to prove to him?”

A sudden idea struck her and she almost glowed in joy. “I got it! I have the answer!” She hopped and danced around, chirping happily, forgetting to even tell the other bird what the idea was.

Apple did a little hop of excitement as she looked at the pile of rocks and crystals. "That's cool! I'd like to see you do it! I mean, I don't think it will be as big as that one, but it would look cool!" She really was interested. She wondered how the bird would do it, being so small. Maybe she could help her!

"It's nice to meet you, Gypsy! I'm Apple!" She smiled and fluttered her wings, proud of her name. She didn't know what an Apple was, but she thought it was pretty. Gypsy was pretty too! She wondered what Gypsy would sound like if she laughed. She liked hearing laughs and she thought that the pretty little bird would have a lovely laugh. She would have to find a way later.

"Well," she started, thinking of ways to get back at the weird creature, "we could, uh..." but then Gypsy started talking and getting all excited. Apple got excited too, elated by her happiness. She hoped with her chirping with excitement. "Ooo! What is it? What is it? You have to tell me!"

"Ooo! What is it? What is it? You have to tell me!"

Gypsy stopped hopping and turned to Apple, blue and black feathers fluffing up in joy.

“I heard there is something called the Oh-lymph-fix happening soon! I heard it from Kin-Kin, the magickal demi-god!” She didn’t seem to realise she was saying Olympics all wrong and rushed on, eager tell Apple all about her wonderful idea. “There is a wrestling event, where all the strongest Gembounds will join to prove how tough they are! I’m going to join in and show everyone just how strong I can be! I don’t even have to win! I just have to show them I won’t be messed with!” She beamed brightly, waiting for Apple’s response.

Apple stopped hopping as well, listening intently. "Oh-lymph-fix? What is that? Sounds like fun!" But if it was fighting, she wasn't sure that it would be fun. She gave Gypsy a worried look. "B-but you're so small! Won't there be bigger gembounds there? They might kill you! Wouldn't it be better to join one where you show off your other talents?"

She puffed out her chest. "If there's one where I can show my speed, I'll do it too! I'm pretty quick, you know! You should try too! Flying is a lot faster then running, after all." She gave another flutter of her wings, showing off how big they were, even though they weren't actually too large, considering her age.

"Oh-lymph-fix? What is that? Sounds like fun!”

“Oh-lymph-fix is a series of games to see who is good at what!” Gypsy explained. Of course, she’d never been to one before, but she was happy to show off what she knew.

“B-but you're so small! Won't there be bigger gembounds there? They might kill you! Wouldn't it be better to join one where you show off your other talents?"

Gypsy’s feathers rustled indignantly. “I’m not that small!” she insisted. “Sure, there will be big Gembounds, but it’s just a game! No one can kill me! Besides, I’m tougher than I look! And I’m going to show everyone just that!” She strutted around with the fiercest expression she could muster, to illustrate her point.

"If there's one where I can show my speed, I'll do it too! I'm pretty quick, you know! You should try too! Flying is a lot faster then running, after all."

“I’m sure there are other events like that,” Gypsy said thoughtfully. “I’ll go for it with you!” She eyed Apple’s fluttering wings with a hint of jealousy. They were bigger than hers, and Gypsy still couldn't fly. It would be an excellent advantage to have in the games.

She sighed, unfolding her own set of wings in dismay. Hesitating for a moment, she slowly admitted her dilemma. “H-How did you learn to fly...? I still dunno how…”

She felt rather embarrassed.

Apple shrugged. "Well, if you say so. Just be careful!" She couldn't imagine ever wanting to wrestle anyone or fight and she wondered what Gypsy would be like in a fight. She wondered if she would be any use at all. But she didn't think she should express her worries. Her friend had made it pretty clear that she was going to do it anyways.

But in a game where everyone sees who's best? That didn't sound too bad. That actually sounded pretty fun! She wanted to do it too! She gave a couple hops of excitement. "Yes, yes this sounds very fun! I think I'll do it too! We'll enter it together!"

She cocked her head. Really? The bird didn't know how to fly? Well, maybe she hadn't hatched on top of a tree, like she had. She was forced to learn to fly if she wanted to go anywhere. It had also come almost naturally to her. Perhaps there were differences between birds. She didn't know. But she would be happy to teach the bird to fly. "I just learned. I had to if I wanted to get off the tree I hatched on. I can teach you! It's easy!"

She hopped and spread her wings. "You just move them up and down, like this!" She demonstrated, doing it slowly at first, but then speeding up. "It has to be fast, though, or else nothing happens."
