There was a small chrysalis tucked away in the corner of Tunnel N, positioned in such a way that unless one was actively looking for its clear petalite shell, it would most certainly not be noticed.

The gemstone comprising it was just clear enough to see the outline of a young cockatiel. The Gembound within stirred, instinctively pushing up against the walls. Heart-Song slowly opened their eyes, only to see their own gemstone encasing them.

Heart-Song panicked, thrashing against the walls of their chrysalis. They remembered being in a shell like this what felt like a long time ago, but they had no reason for why they were in it again. They didn't remember why they were in it again. What was going on?

They focused their efforts, pecking hard at the wall of their chrysalis. No matter what had happened, they wanted out.

With a crackle of gemstone, the chrysalis caved outwards, unceremoniously dumping Heart-Song on the floor. They stood, stumbling for a few moments as they got used to standing again. How long had they been out?

@Blackberry

Blackberry was doing a small bit of housecleaning around the nest. It was extremely unusual for her to be doing something as low as this, but the place was a mess and the smell was really getting to her. She sighed as she leaned down, tossing reeking bones into the garbage pile and tearing away pieces of old bedding that hadn't been changed. If they weren't going to care for their own nests, then she'd have to do it for them. She thought that she had raised them better.

It took her a while, but the nest was smelling considerably better by the time she was finished. The garbage dump was still disgusting - she wasn't big enough to clear it out. Perhaps Blueberry or Huckleberry could change it later.

The crack interrupted her thoughts and, despite knowing what the sound was, immediately whipped around, her feathers tingling as if ready to fight an enemy. She bared her teeth and took off towards the place where she had heard the sound.

As soon as she saw the young gembound, though, she stopped. Was it a newhatched? No, it didn't look like a baby. It was older. Maybe not full grown, but definitely not new to the world. She didn't know why they had gone back into their chrysalis. They didn't look hurt or strange in any way, just a bird.

She stepped forward curiously and looked over the little bird with one of her piercing red eyes. "Welcome back to the caves, young one. What did you leave for?"

@Heart-Song
Heart-Song looked up at the sound of flapping wings, spotting a bird coming closer and closer. Fear stabbed through her heart for a moment- the creature looked truly terrifying, what with its red eyes and a beak clearly meant for attacking. She calmed herself down with the thought that nobody she had ever met so far was dangerous, and the bird was most likely just curious.

She tilted her head as the bird landed, listening to the bird’s rasping voice. “I.. I dunno.” Heart-Song paused at that, a lull in the conversation forming as she thought back to her memories before she had entered the chrysalis. They seemed fuzzy and dull, as if it had been a while since they had happened. She vaguely remembered getting separated from Aegir while traveling with him, and then her memories faded away to a dull nothingness.

“I was traveling with my friend when we got seperated. I- I dunno what happened after that.”

@Blackberry

Blackberry snorted at the explanation. She sometimes forgot how incredibly stupid the gembounds of the caves could be. They retreat into pre-life just because they lost their friend? She went into that state because a wolf ripped her apart, feather by feather. It didn't seem like they had a bad time in it, either - they looked unscathed, mostly normal, and perfectly sane. That would make things easier.

She looked around at the tunnel. They weren't exactly very close to one of the openings to Polaris or Orion. Although they were some distance away from the nest, the bird was dangerously close to their nesting spot. "Alright, but what were you doing in here, anyways? Hell of a place to pick to sleep, really." Then again, perhaps word of her family had never reached their ears. Too few people knew about them. Perhaps that was a sign that they should become more active, present members of the caves.

@Heart-Song
They looked down at the ground sheepishly, fidgeting with their wings. “I was exploring alone when I saw your- it’s yours, right?- nest. I saw it, and- and I thought that it would be nice to see the Gembounds that made this nest, to get to know them. B-but nobody was there when I was, so I thought I would sleep a bit nearby and wait for them- you to come back.”

Heart-Song kept their other reasons quiet. After all, who would want to know that someone saw their nest and thought it would be nice to be part of a family like that, nice to have not one, but many friends, friends that they couldn’t get separated from.

Even reviewing it in their mind, it sounded creepy. So they kept their thoughts to themselves.

@Blackberry

Blackberry widened her eyes with surprise, not really sure how to react. Should she be mad that this creature had dared set foot near her family's nest? Should she be worried that someone could get so close without them noticing? Or should she be happy that there was yet another child presenting themselves to her so willingly?

She remembered that Blueberry had mentioned to her that growing the family would make them stronger. And this kid had guts, that was for sure. Blackberry always liked having more children to protect, her motherly instincts wanting to bring in as many as possible under her wing, but also her need to make her family strong with fierce warriors. While this bird didn't display any obvious signs of physical or magical strength, there was still potential, just as Dewberry had.

She couldn't refrain from letting out a chuckle. "Well, we're definitely here now. What do you say? Would you like to meet some of them?" She wondered what the bird would think about the family. She wanted to scare them, but she also wanted to inspire them. She wasn't very good at manipulating people, since all the ones that had joined her family had either joined at birth or had been hatched into the family. This would be an interesting change.

@Heart-Song
Heart-Song watched the goose's expression carefully, looking for a sign that what they said was okay. They had never been so nervous around another Gembound before, but her appearance and demeanor sent chills down her spine. They wanted to get to know her. They wanted to get to know her family- they really did, but they were afraid that they might've said the wrong thing.

She spoke, and relief flooded through their system, followed quickly by excitement. "Yes, yes, please!" they chirped, waggling their tail as the other chuckled.

Almost as an afterthought, an idea came to them.

"What's your name?" she asked. "I'm Heart-Song."

@Blackberry

Triumphant, Blackberry glanced back at the nest, imagining the little bird fitting in with her family. How strange it would be to have another very small little creature be part of such a bloodthirsty group. She wasn't complaining, though - any member of the family was welcome, anyone willing to learn would learn. And maybe even those not too willing.

She looked back at the bird and gave them a nod, her eyes glittering, but giving nothing away. "Excellent. Follow me. If anyone's there, I'll introduce you." She turned and began heading back towards the nest, only looking back at Heart-Song's question. "I'm Blackberry. As you'll see, Heart-Song, all members of my family have 'berry' in their names. It is our family's title." She held herself from revealing the family's true name just yet. Let them meet someone first. See how they reacted to first impressions.

@Heart-Song @Jayberry any other Bloodberries hanging around the nest are welcome to join!

Jayberry rested next to the nest.

She didn't want to get blood on the already messy nest, so while she ate she lay outside the nest. A cavebird rested between her paws, its head gone, and she crunched down on its torso. Hollow bones shattered beneath her fangs, and blood coated her teeth. Her precious Gem was attached to the wall not far from the nest, where it would be protected by any who nested there.

It was mother's approach that made her stand, gulping down the remainder of the cavebird. Unaware or, perhaps, uncaring, of the blood that coated her fangs, the blood and feathers on her muzzle, she approached mother and that scent.

"Hello Mother," she called, smiling and wagging her tail. "And who is this?"

@Heart-song @Blackberry

"Speech looks like this."
Thoughts look like this.

They followed Blackberry, looking around the nest with wonder, trying to take everything in. Their tail wagged with excitement, and there was a certain bounce in their step as they walked closer to the nest.

A wolf caught their attention. They looked up, over at her, quietly ignoring the gore of her kill. They had seen a dead fish before, partaken in its meat- they knew that death was a thing in the caves. However, the blood upon her fangs and fur, that was a different story. It looked like she had committed a murder. (and in a sense, she had, although Heart-Song didn't quite consider killing Lessers for food murder) A shiver ran up their spine- what if it was their white feathers on the wolf's muzzle?

Eventually, they got over their shock enough to speak. "H-hi!" they greeted. "I'm Heart-Song!"
