The Chrysalis was nearly clear, but the figure inside was still hard to make out.

Something dark colored, perhaps? Purplish, maybe? Though it was hard to tell, distorted as it was by its Chrysalis. But when it moved, it was near impossible to miss, something twitching, a flicker of bright, bright blue.

And then the Chrysalis shattered, releasing the young Gembound to the dirt. The bird-demon blinked, squinting into its first view of the light, bird-bat wings slowly spreading, feathers still wet, batting slowly in an instinctive attempt to dry.

The creature twitched its head to the side, eyes widening as a shard of its Chrysalis shined in the light, and reached out to clasp it in a taloned hand. There was a flash of light, a gleam of its gemstone, and the shard began to glow bright enough that it had to look away.

@Azrael @Forgraves

Azrael had built up his den a little more since giving life to the little shard, for both his comfort as he waited for it to hatch, and as a proper home for Forgraves who didn't often leave his side. Proper nests of scraps of hide and scavenged leather now inhabited the little alcove and he'd taken up carving bones in his spare time, although he wasn't exactly very good at it, often becoming frustrated and burning it to cinders.

He had been waiting, growing worried, as the gem took a long time - too long - to hatch. Had something gone wrong? Had his spell failed after all? Perhaps the bird had been dead for too long or he'd damaged the stone when he'd killed it. No, that couldn't be right, becuase it had grown to a massive size, compared to its original. There was something growing in there...and it was going to hatch.

When the day came that there was movement within the chrysalis, Azrael didn't notice it at first. He wasn't paying attention to it, instead engrossed by the bone in his hand that he was meticulously carving with one claw. When it shattered, he flinched with surprise, startled by the sudden noise, the bone flying out of his hand. But he didn't care about retrieving it, all of his attention on the child that had emerged from the gem.

He stood up with a grunt and stepped over, tilting his head as he gazed down at the young thing. It was...small, but he supposed that it was just young. And it was a strange color - he couldn't remember the bird being white. Perhaps one of them had an ancestor that had that sort of coloration. But he could recognize himself in it. In the arms and legs, the wings and the body shape. His eyes drifted to the shard of gemstone that it had lit up and he nodded to himself. They would be strong, then, in magic. This was a good sign.

He reached down with his four arms and gently made to scoop up the young creature and cradle them against his chest, gently heating up his insides so that a nice warmth would spread across his body and, hopefully, warm the creature. "Hello," he rumbled. "I am Azrael. I will protect you."

@Forgraves
Forgraves woke up at the sound of the chrysalis shattering with a loud yelp, scattering frightfully into the back corner of their den., watching with a curious gaze despite just being startled. after realizing what had happened and that it was nothing bad, simply a hatching, he smiled. he saw his friend venti hatch, hadn't he?

he padded close to azrael after a moment, mostly coming up from behind him again, bumping his snout into his leg, silently asking for guidance on what to do.

Something moved.

Perhaps they should have been concerned - movement, that was new? They had never seen movement before, but the shard was glowing so beautifully, and though they couldn't look straight at it they could watch it from the corner of their eye, basking in its light, in its glow.

They had never seen anything so beautiful, and they were certain nothing would ever match its beauty.

But the creature that approached them was unable to be ignored, so with a protesting sound as they were picked up - no, their shiny! - they lunged to grab it as they were scooped up, the light glowing brightly through their talons, cradled as preciously as they were cradled themself.

They relaxed into the warmth, peering up at the creature - this, 'Azrael', ruffling their many, many feathers, before mimicking "Azrael," attempting to pitch down their voice in the same way that he had, voice cracking in a way that was nearly comical.

They reached up - he had given them warmth, and so they would give him a gift, too - and tangled some of their talons in the fur of his chest, and if they could frown they would have when the light that fizzled through the fur was faded and dull, not nearly the glow of their shard.

@Azrael

Azrael paused as he lifted the hatchling. It was reaching for something - oh, the shard that it had made glow. He snorted and straigthened up, stepping back to sit against the wall, nearly tripping over Forgraves as he did. He grunted and looked back, carefully stepping over the fox before sliding down. "Forgraves. This is your brother. I gave him life. You will be good to your brother, yes?" He looked down at the hatchling, perhaps not with the most obvious fondness, but with something other then his usual apathy.

He tilted his head as it reached forward, tapping his fur. He began to glow, just a little bit, under the younglings spell and Azrael almost laughed at the expression of disappointment on its face. It would be like him, then - never settling for less then the best possible. Expecting only what was intended and nothing else. He figured this once, just this once, it would be alright to lie to the child. It would be okay to give it a false result, to feign that its spell had gone better then it initially thought - because why not inspire the child now, to know what it can do, so that it can continue to reach forward in the future?

He began to glow stronger, bolstered by his own spell - not blindingly bright, but stronger then the bauble from the child had been. He snorted. "You have good magic. Like mine, but of light, not Darkness. Do you have name? I name you if you do not."

@Forgraves
forgraves somewhat chuckled in apology as azrael nearly tripped on him, which he couldn't exactly blame him for. he listened to him speak. while he doesn't think he's heard the meaning for the word "brother" before, it intrigued him. he assumed that, based on context alone, that they were his family now too, whatever brother actually meant. he nodded, if they were his family now, of course he'd be good to them, why wouldn't he?

he sat next to azrael, observing the creature with his head tilted. it was hard to imagine how big he had actually gotten by this point, still acting quite childish at times despite how long it had been, his gem almost covered by his growing neck fur.

The bird-demon grunted as their parent stumbled, shifting to adjust themselves to grow more comfortable, head jerking-twitching-shifting in the way of a bird to peer down, trying to make out whoever their life-giver was speaking to. Something white, the same color that they'd seen on themself, echoing again in a poor mimicry of Azrael's voice, "Forgraves."

They had no experience with magic, so how were they to know that the time it took the glow to brighten wasn't how magic worked? But oh, that light was beautiful, striking against Azrael's dark fur, and they were striken by it, unable to look away.

Until, at least, they were addressed. 'I am... Light? I am shine, I am brightness.' But no, that was not their name, they could say that for certain. "No. No name is mine."

The child seemed to have a fairly good grasp of intelligence and the mimicry was interesting. Perhaps it was something picked up from its crow parent, as he didn't think that he had the ability to do that. Now that it was fully awake, though, he figured that it could probably stand on its own legs and wanted it to get properly introduced to Forgraves. So he gently adjusted his grip and use his many arms to carefully get the child so that he was holding them from under its arms, gently setting it on the ground on its feet, not yet pulling his arms away in case it couldn't walk. If it could, however, he'd bring his arms back into his lap. "Yes, Forgraves." He gestured to the young fox. "This is your brother. We are family now."

The name...he was never very good at names. He had spent a very long time trying to figure out his own. Actually, he had gone almost his entire childhood without giving himself a name at all. But he'd had time by himself to work out what he would name this child and so, when it told him that it did not have anything to name itself, he responded. "Then you are Banshy. And you are one of us."

@Forgraves
forgraves was surprised by the mimicry to say the least but smiled.

he listened to azrael describe him as the bird-thing's brother warmed his heart. a family, this was nice. azrael was always his family, but more people was new, but welcome. he smiled. "y-yes, i am forgraves, hello there"

@Banshy

Its eyes widened as it found itself placed on its feet by so many arms, grasping them as it tried to get used to standing. Its wings spread wide, gradiented feathers giving way to leather, to help it maintain its balance, but before long it was standing on its own two feet, head jerking around in a bird's way to take in its surroundings.

'I am... Banshy? I am them.' They liked the sound of that, and they grinned as best a bird could, saying "Banshy..." with a nod. That was a good name - although, really, they couldn't be much of a judge, could they? They only knew two other names.

"Hello Forgraves," they said, slowly developing their own speech, looking around and carefully crouching, scooping up a nearby bone which was, funny enough, a tiny little bird skull, a quick pull of their magic setting it to glowing. With a satisfied nod, they offered it to Forgraves.
