Appearance

Cocytus is not as gigantic as one might expect. Chinese alligators are smaller than their American relatives; in fact, they're one of the smallest crocodilians in the world. When she's all grown up, she'll reach a length of 1.6 meters (approximately 5.25 feet) and weigh 36 kilograms (80 pounds). Her eyes are a dark, murky grey-brown with black pupils that appear to be a vertical slit. Her entire body is armored, including her underbelly, which is covered with bony plates. The greyish brownish coloration of her scales and their rough texture helps her blend in with rocks and marshes. Her snout is shorter than that of an American alligator and filled with many blunt teeth adapted for crushing. Her limbs are short and she walks with her belly close to the ground. Her tail is long, appearing to be as long as her body. Her heavy body and short limbs mean that she isn't very good at running. She is capable of short bursts of speed, especially in water, as she lunges for prey. Her gem is normally not visible, as it rests on her underside - her throat. It is a rough collection of smoky quartz crystals jutting out from her scales, murky brownish grey and almost opaque.

Personality

Cocytus is stubborn and has a fiery temper that flares up at anything she perceives as unfair. Although she can hold grudges for a long time, she does not believe in judging others based on species, element, or the actions of others (for example, friends or family, unless they condoned their actions). The one exception is that she tends to think more highly and be more forgiving of fellow reptiles/crocodilians. She despises greed, and will gladly agree to help someone in need even if they can offer nothing in return for her aid, giving her all to the effort and looking down on those who refuse requests for help. If she feels that she or others has been wronged, she will remember the misdeed and hold a grudge for as long as she lives, even if the wrongdoer repents. Anyone who declines to help on the basis of an absence of reward will be added to her grudge list and looked upon with much contempt. This may stem from a deep-down fear that one day, she will be the one in need of aid, and will be abandoned because of (to her) the silliest reasons.

She believes that each and every Gembound's life is precious, and even mourns the lives of her own prey. Killing Greater Gembound is a truly horrific crime. She remembers, and she does not forgive. She treats gems that formerly held life with the utmost reverence, believing that it holds the soul of the creature. To destroy a gem or to otherwise disrespect it would be bordering on sacrilege. The gem deserves at least to rest with dignity, if not a chance to live again.
