a memory, a reverie — all black-and-white feathers and stuttering sinew, more the concept of a bird than any which one you could name. hybrid by nature, damask clearly takes after the avian half of her ancestry, with only teeth here, tufted ears there, and a handful of additional afterthoughts to betray the mammalian other. far more prominent is the breadth of her wingspan, hackling with steely pinions and gunmetal coverts, furnished with two dextrous trios of claws; the full coat of plumage, starkly monochrome, found everywhere except her feet and muzzle, punctuated with wide fronds at the base and tip of her tail’s appreciable length; and the biting, unblinking force of her accipitrine eyes, liquid quicksilver within a mask of shadow. notably, she lacks the lammergeier beard that heralds the vita lineage, as well as her progenitors’ formidable size — damask is actually rather small by cave standards, scarcely larger than a common hawk. her strengths lie instead with speed and agility, whether on the wing or with solid ground underfoot. a sharp, attentive breed of wit resounds in every movement, performed incrementally in rapid stops and starts. her face is kept under careful control, leaving her expressions nigh inscrutable apart from fractional cues — intake of breath, incline of the head, a flick of eye contact this way or that. it’s difficult to discern true tells and unsheathed reactions from the odd emotive feint, designed to disguise what lies underneath.
the stone at her core is a flake of red jasper in the shape of a primitive blade, carved and chipped to a cutting point. embedded deep between her lungs, it causes coughing and chest pain under heavy use, high stress, or strenuous exercise — a bitter stroke of irony, given her elemental aptitudes. though not altogether disabling, this conspires with humble stature and hollow bones to form a certain fragility that damask commits herself to concealing. here is a dagger just shy of the heart, a psyche as keen as the winds it commands, a soul who would sooner stand still than step imperfectly. born the latest in a house of honor and heroism, damask feels from the outset that she is something different, almost a fluke, driven less by instinct than intellect. as such, she finds herself torn in a war between her head and her heart, one by nature and the other by teaching — and hard as she tries to obey the latter, it’s the former that tends to win out. hers is a mind of exceptional acuity, built to run on logic and mathematics. she catches on details and draws connections in ways others cannot, unravels the most intricate concepts with ease, remembers everything within her purview without the slightest fault or delay. but the lens through which she sees the world can also be a wall. she senses glass between herself and the rest, and she feels herself watching, circling, trying and failing to breach the barrier, uncertain as to whether she is inside or outside of the cage. damask is rather a remote sort of creature, too subtle, swift, and serious for most to really reach. though given to isolated moments of humor and mischief as well as wide-eyed awe and wonder, she comes across otherwise as coolly faraway, hard to approach and harder to follow.
at the same time that she longs for untroubled independence, damask feels a tremendous pressure to do her forefathers proud, and while it does instill a high-achieving sense of ambition, with it comes fear: fear of failure, that she will disappoint, that she will be any less than flawless. it makes her hesitate, sometimes even freeze, and although she hides it well, her eagerness to prove herself borders on desperation. damask is a shapeshifter, folding herself into origami archetypes to match whatever others seem to expect from her; tell her who you want her to be, and that’s what you’ll get. who she really is, now, that’s a puzzle she struggles to solve. when she looks inward, she finds an existential malaise, the true pursuer behind her profound inability to trust her own intuitions — and her opposite appetite for knowledge and skill; anything at all for her mind to chew on that isn’t itself. she cannot seem to name it, this sickness. it slips from her talons with every endeavor to grasp at it, amorphous and impossible. at times it swells enough for her to stumble, even threatens to bury her, and then she finds herself gasping and shuddering and shrinking into nothing until the storm passes. she lives in a haunted house of blood, bone, eyes like neon signs that read no vacancy. it’s a mongrel of fear and fascination, push and pull, ebb and flow. she knows she cannot defeat it — any of it — without confronting it, but she can only dance away from each fitful flicker of it, feeling as though she has already seen too much. a reckoning will come. for now, she wishes only for the disquiet to disappear.
