Appearance

Maximus is 12 feet tall at the top of their head in a bipedal stance. They can go to all fours to increase running speed, though their natural form is upright. Having suffered from a deformed hind end in their youth, they still find themselves carrying habits they had before, like reverting to all fours on longer walks or sitting down with their hind legs off to one side to ease the pressure on their pelvis, even laying down all together. Due to also being blind for the first few months of their life, they are also able to pay attention to their other senses a lot more than others, having been relying on them due to their lack of sight. This allows Maximus to smell things better and overhear conversations as long as they shut their eyes and focus.

The valkhound has a soft, tawny pelt with a lighter, belly and ivory legs and arms. Their long, sharp quills are the same color but aren’t toxic like their life-giver’s, though the tips are white and glow slightly in the dark. They have a short, fluffy tail (their lamb tail) and knife-like claws on each finger and thumb on their hands, giving them the ability to open doors and use tools but struggle to pull one’s debit card from a reader.

Max is tall and lithe with a runner’s physique and has very good endurance due to their upright, humanoid stance. Their legs end in a pair of cloven hooves and their arms are wrapped in wiry muscle with dense keratin plates along the back of their forearms to block or deflect incoming attacks or bites. Their head is the most similar to an addax, with an antelope-like face complete with the signature X of an addax (though theirs is purple) and two spiralling horns twisting from their head. Their nostrils are large to increase oxygen consumption when running and their cheekbones protrude outwards like Vargas’, with four glowing green eyes set near each other with one pair in the ‘normal’ position and the second, smaller pair further on the horn-like protrusions. Recently, a massive mane has grown over the quills on their back, hiding them from view, as well as around their neck and chest, creating a poofy, top-heavy look to them. Their forearms thickened and more fluff covered their entire body, making them look deceptively friendly, like a bear. Their horns became antlers and their eyes completely changed color, glowing a soft pink-orange.

Lastly, their gemstone. Nothing can be done to fix the glossy black oilstone, meaning that Maximus has to suffer with their sharp, spiky stone poking their tongue and gums for the rest of their life. While their tusks are fearsome and useful for goring, the spikes in their mouth also provide an extra level of attack and make tearing and eating meat much easier, for most of their teeth are flat and meant for chewing and grinding grasses and flora. Most of their teeth fell out due to their malformed gemstone and they must speak slowly in order to overcome their unfortunate speech impediment, which causes their words to slur or stutter due to the three small spikes on the underside of their mouth. It can end in very painful cuts and scratches on their tongues and can sometimes lead to it swelling, inhibiting their speech even more. It is not an easy obstacle to overcome, but one they will and have been.

Post New Leaf:

Maximus has gained two new mutations. Leaves and flowers that grow from their mane, and white markings. The markings create a blaze up their nose and white socks on each of their limbs to the first joint (elbow and ankle). They also smell like flowers.

Scars:

Maximus has a massive scar from a meadow deer, though the inflicted wounds came instead from a miscast Failed Timeline. It goes from their torso, up their shoulders and neck, and the fur might never grow back properly. There are deep scars indented all over their back, the backs of their arms, and the backs of their legs from a forged Bonecase as well.

Personality

Since being dismissed from the Chaos Forge, Maximus has lived a very peaceful life. Though they are still affected by their trauma in the form of nightmares and a timid, flinchy nature, they continue to try and be the best they can be. They strive to be kind and to look for the best in people while keeping a healthy level of suspicion in case their kindness backfires.

Maximus is intelligent and cunning, having been trained by Vargas himself. While they wouldn’t have made a good soldier, they still retain the information beaten into them by their intense training while they were a part of the Chaos Forge. They can track, hide, and fight if they really need to, as well as skillfully use a spear. With their intense practice using the piano in the Palace, they can play it too, which helped them learn to keep their calm and be patient. They are a healer through and through, however. First and foremost, they wish to help others, to heal what has been broken, to comfort who has been hurt. But don’t think that means they’re weak. They’ll go from a pharmacist to a harmacist if you give them a good reason.

As soft and fluffy as they initially appear, Maximus has learned the cruelty of life. Underneath their gentle, kind exterior is a calculating and ruthless interior. They learned the hard way that it’s kill or be killed. If Vargas finds them, if anyone finds them with the intent to harm or kill… they’ll go all the way. Regretfully, perhaps, but they will. They were raised with killers, after all. Of course they’d pick some things up. If only they’d found out sooner…
