Appearance
Melpomene is a lovely pied crow, all elegance and grace. Wouldn't you like to have feathers as glossy and pristine as hers? Wouldn't you love to have such elegant wings as she does? She takes great pride in her appearance, and she does little to jeopardize that. Often you'll see her high up, far away from all that crawls on the ground. No one wants dirty feathers, you see. As an adult, she will be a magnificent 2ft tall, weighing nothing more than a single pound. She is all contrast - black feathers and black eyes, white feathers and a bright, luminous gem of Larimar that rests over her chest. As much as she loves her gem, it does not sit well with her how unruly it is, how speckled and streaked it remains. How she envies those with pristine gems without a fleck or fracture! But alas - not everything can be perfect. Of course....this is only when she is an adult. As a new gembound, she is, to put it simply, a mess. Fuzz that molts! A beak too large for her! Gangly limbs and uncoordinated movements! She is a disgrace to her own eyes, pinned to the ground with all the rest of the cretins who do not see their own failings. And how small and insignificant she is at first, weighing only a scant few ounces, no more than four inches tall. If her looks will not save her, she will do what she can to rise above the filth, even if it takes magic and manipulation. Personality
Oh, to hear her laugh is a terrible thing. She takes pleasure in watching the unfortunate ones beneath her crawl and writhe among dead leaves. Perhaps it is her carrion nature, but she is attracted to the injured and those who lay bleeding. What mood shall she be in when she sees a weak gem? Will she extend a wing to help? Or will her sharp beak rip and tear that wound wider? To be sure, she harbors a goal in her chest. She wishes to hone her magics to heal, to soothe wounds and broken minds, to save lives upon the brink of death - though it is a vicious thing she dreams! She wants to be the one who hears those who beg for their lives all alone; she dreams of being your last chance, your only hope, with your life solely relying upon her whim. If there is one weakness to this wretch, it is her desire to hear a good joke. Comedy is the other companion to tragedy, is it not? Too much grim gnashing of teeth can really weigh on a theater goer such as herself, and some levity makes the show all the sweeter. She will happily do a favor for one who makes her laugh, though beware her should the joke fall flat. History
