Appearance
Oh yes, that collection of mushrooms is thinking. Scheming. Evolving. How did a chrysalis come to hatch a mushroom of all things? Perhaps we will never know...
The Chorus is the thinking mycelia of a specimen of armillaria mellea, commonly known as the honey fungus. The central nervous system of this....thing will grow thick hyphae around its amber heart to protect it, as there is no true "body" to keep it otherwise safe. If enough of this hyphae is destroyed or separated from the amber, The Chorus will die in its entirety. It will ensure this does not happen. Once it grows large enough, and the mycelia has spread far enough, it will begin to fruit. The fruiting body of the Chorus are collections of small orange mushrooms - when young, they have rounded caps and are a light honey color. As they age, the cap widens and flattens and grows slightly darker until they eventually wither and die. When wet, the cap becomes quite sticky. The stipe is tough and streaked with white, and bears a ring near the hymenium gills. The fruiting mushrooms are edible, although quite chewy and only the cap is particularly worth eating. And The Chorus encourages you to ask before tasting. Personality
Such an alien and complex mind must have time to develop, but it knows one thing - it must spread. It is utterly immobile after the first few cycles of life - should it be seperated from its mycelium, it will be like cutting off all the limbs of an animal. Hell, take the torso too, leaving only the head behind to rebuild. Because of this immobility, it finds its sight and its experience through spreading as far as it can reach. As long as the hyphae connect back to the central crystal, it is a part of its body.
It is a unity of minds. It does not think in singles as most gembound, hell, most creatures do. It is an infinite being, ever growing and changing and experiencing, one being spread across a web of minds. They are many, and yet they are One. They are calculatingly intelligent, with a near perfect memory, but emotionally...they misunderstand and often don't quite get it. They simply are removed from the experiences of other gembound and think more often in logic and rationale. The first, and central, being of The Chorus calls itself Abdicus. It is the tangle of thick fungal cords wrapped around the amber at its core. It has diverted much of the network's early resources to fortify itself to keep their stone safe, and as such is extremely protective of The Chorus. One could argue it is the queen to a hive, as all sensory input eventually crosses through it, and all magic comes from it. Yet it is indistinguishable from all of the others, and will rarely, if ever, identify itself to outsiders. History
