As they paused, she looked curiously at the rough green vegetation below, unsure how to proceed. It was only as the other fawn chewed the strange thing that she made the connection. Tentatively, she plucked a small blade from the rocky floor, stubborn in its perseverance to living despite rather deplorable conditions for a patch of grass. It may have been poor quality, but to the hungry child, it might as well have been candy. As the flavor permeated across her tongue, she immediately dropped her head and grasped for more of this odd, delicious thing. The patch was small and scraggly, and she made rather quick work of eating it, only feeling regretful after the fact that she hadn’t offered more to her friend. He hadn’t seemed terribly interested, at least. And while the little patch wasn’t even a full meal for the newborn fawn, it at least quelled the rumbling in her stomach and left her feeling refreshed, if not a bit sleepy. Cheerily, she tilted her head toward the white fawn, not terribly unlike a puppy in her excitement.
As she wondered where he might lead them next, a flash of fear waved over her once more, born as she glanced at the world around them. Without him, where would she be? For a moment, she was helpless, miniscule in this world. This feeling was pushed aside after a moment with feelings of gratitude, and a sensation of comfort stemming from his presence. The moment passed with only a passing expression to show for it, one that could have easily gone unnoticed as she so quickly softened to the same tender fondness as before.
How lost I’d be without you.
