North-East Quadrant — Tunnel G

Tunnel G is a narrow tunnel, surrounded on both sides by tall, towering cliff faces that almost seem to lean inward. At the center of the tunnel is a doorway, carved from ornate stone with a high arch at its top. There seems to be no actual door, although strange oil-like crystals have overgrown some of the doorway. The cave lights lead through the doorway and down the rest of the tunnel, but their light seems to fade beyond the doorway, where the light flips completely into inverted Voidlight. It is an otherwise empty tunnel, a straight and foreboding passageway.
LOCATIONS

Pegasus Entrance
A gentle, wide, circle-like entrance plush with grasses and flowers, and labradorite waystones.
Draco Entrance
Dipped in the darkness of Voidlight, this entrance is narrow at the top and widens at the bottom, like a claw has struck the rock.
The Door of Life
This strange doorway marks the halfway point between the Pegasus and Draco entrances. Once one passes through the doorway toward Draco, the light in the tunnel is inverted, with dark colors falling away to shadow and light colors popping with vibrant glow.

At once, there was light, then sight, hearing, tactile sensation. The walls of their chrysalis pressing up against them, suffocating her.

Aiming a kick at the chrysalis' oilstone walls, the creature let out a choked warble as their hit landed and a crack spiderwebbed up the crystal walls. Shuffling to continue hammering that weak spot until pieces of it began to flake away.

Finally, a hole large enough to ooze out of her chrysalis prison and onto the cave floors. Still covered in incubation fluids.

She- They- he- Ophiuchus, he realized, that was his name. Ophiuchus scrambled upright, shaking like a wet dog and flinging fluid everywhere.

V-Onyx-Three's memories after the tournament which he had so disastrously failed in were blurry. He supposed he'd returned to his life, pondering, trying to figure out what had gone wrong. How he had lost- in the first round- and to someone so closely related to his archnemesis no less. Shame, that sickly feeling, sank its fangs into him in a way no gembound or weapon ever had. He could barely face his father, The Sentinel, the one who guarded the very tunnel he was in at the moment, knowing all his efforts in training him had gone to waste. Useless useless useless. But their soul was made of stronger stuff than those who would break before the beckoning of fate. This was yet another lesson to them. They had idled in their training. Tending to the forge (literally, the forge) had caused them to lose sight of their original goal.

Ears perked, one swiveling towards the source of the sound. Cracking. Someone was emerging. First breath, or one after many cycles of hibernation? Loping on all fours, gait steady and easy without the weight of the bow and quiver they usually had with them, V-Onyx-Three located the oilstone chrysalis. The gembound- valkhound had hatched.

"Hello," he greeted the young creature, hands moving to clear the fluid off of them. "Do you have a name?"

The insecurities swirling through V-Onyx-Three's mind mattered little to the gembound, because from their quick analysis this gembound looked big and tough! Ophiuchus quickly decided that they to wished to be big and tough.

"I am Ophiuchus!" They declared, "You look strong! Show me! Show me how you became strong!"

They righted themself, jaw chattering with excitement, imagining all the things they could do if they were strong! Like lift boulders, shatter boulders, throw boulders, it was all very boulder based, but it wasn't like they'd had any experience with anything outside of the tunnel's stone walls.

Look. V-Onyx-Three was not about to beat up a kid. If they had a list of things they would never do, that would be pretty high up there (assuming the kid was not Order). But the more he stared at the little hatchling, who looked so eager and determined to learn, it was hard not to feel at least a little bit compelled to teach it a thing or two despite its age. He had been rather young himself when the Sentinel had given him his first lesson. Now here he was, on the other end. Was a purpose like this what they needed in their life?

A smile tugged at the edge of his lips, an unusual break from his serious expression. "Very well, Ophiuchus." V-Onyx-Three lowered his stance, from standing fully upright into a half-crouch. "Attack me. I will respond, but not hurt you. This is called a spar. It is good practice. To be strong."

But also, if they were a valkhound, this would be a good way to see if they wished to join the Forge. So far, it definitely seemed like they had the right attitude.

Ophiuchus nodded along with Onyx's explanation, tongue lolled out and chittering the whole time. They fumbled for a moment, suddenly realizing they didn't actually know..how to fight?

But they were tough! With all their platey things and big claws! But they shouldn't use those, right? Cause it was just a spar. So instead they went to thwack Onyx in the chest with their tail.

What their mind first caught on was a lack that felt all the more for being not-a-thing. The valkhound in its oilstone chrysalis tipped over the precipice to awareness— and suddenly there was an all consuming awareness of how there was not—

Not, what? There was something they were aware of, but it was not—

Whatever they were now knowing, it lacked. This all that they were aware was not…

Well, it simply was not, they decided to sum it up as. Sum it as, for it was an incomplete understanding, but they had not any closer to completing it just for knowing it as incomplete.

—Oh, that was…

Incomplete, they repeated in their mind. What they were aware of now felt not— Because it felt incomplete. It was not the whole. It was not what it could be. Yet- How could it be what it could be?

Focusing on what was not present had not helped them find it, so they focused on what they could.

It was— Tight. Dark. Wet.

The words came to them, the concepts only half-attached, but they delighted in this partial knowing they gained instinctively just through deliberately observing themself.

Did the incomplete of it all have anything to do with those three words? They weren’t entirely sure, the concepts so half-formed as to be more confusing than helpful.

Physical discomfort had them instinctively try to shift, instincts to move and resettle their body to find comfort- But they could not, not really , because it was tight—

And- it could be something other than tight, then? Instincts to move meant movement should be, yes?

Thinking was slow going, even if it was better than not thinking. Acting, being— That was where they learned.

The answer was to not think, but feel, then?

And they felt physical discomfort, felt the urge to move— And they no longer dwelled on the why, the how, the what. They acted, shifting and stretching their body, movements growing harsher as their emotions fueled their movements.

The first crack was small, quiet.

It was one piece, one piece of not-dark, but they made more, until the darkness had all shattered away, leaving behind a bird wet with chrysalis fluids amongst the shards of oilstone. It was quick and yet not. It was done, and yet— It had just begun.

Though damp like a baby chick, the large bird was no child— Not as true children might be defined. The bird lacked experience, but that was already something it was fixing. It was physically grown in a way that was tall, and it delighted in this realization.

Because being tall allowed it to see.

And their sight and therefore attention was caught by one that was large, but not necessarily tall, still somewhat damp in the same way they were, maybe a bit less so. Did that make the plated being— theirs, somehow? They felt connected.

The plated being was— Fighting? No— That felt wrong.

More like not-fighting. They had heard words as the tight space cracked, hadn’t they?

Spar, that was the not-fighting fighting, yes. Practice for strong. They crooned instinctive delight of that, practice to gain experience and be more— The idea of it all resonated with them.

(What they called a croon was a rumbling noise with a hint of trill. It was akin to bird crooning as much as a monstrous tiger being able to purr might be akin to housecat purring)

The plated-one was practicing to become more of what they were. They, too, would practice to be more of what they themself were— By watching and listening, first, learning through the experiences that comes with observing.

They were not the same as the plated-one, but the two of them were connected. So even if they did not become in the same way, knowing how the other could become was good. They would know, learn by being, existing, experiencing.

He had fought, before, in duels which he had to hold back. But this hatchling was so young, freshly hatched, that even defending from their attacks seemed to risk potential injury. Yes, Ophiucus had a what appeared to be natural armor, but who knew if it was one of those situations where it took time to harden?

An ear flicked to the side. What was... going on here? Another gembound had hatched? Suddenly so many in so short a time? It was amusing, almost, to think that he might've had something to do with it even though it was certainly random chance. He could give them both the whole spiel of the Forge if they were interested. They appeared to be valkhounds. Considering the location, they were a more common sight than the regular gembound.

But back to the fight. The tail! Momentarily distracted (forfeiting a clean shot at counterattack) his instincts kicked in - he attempted to dodge by leaping over Ophiuchus. In addition to better positioning if it worked, he hoped to get a better sense of the valkhound's agility and movement.
