Otter Moonlit Dream

The white otter's claws scrabbled furiously against the stone ground as she leaned and pushed, though it was unclear whether she had thought to try and push him up onto his feet or whether she just pushed him sideways. Still, it was something, and as a newborn who didn't quite understand the ways of the world yet, it seemed completely fair to her.

They moved again, and her chest fluttered- she pushed hard as she could with her heart steeled on this one goal. Perhaps he was up, perhaps he fell, but she didn't care- she just kept pushing and pushing and pushing, her brows creased around the gem in her face. After what seemed like an age to her, though perhaps it was only seconds or minutes, it ended; for her at least. This time it seemed to be her turn for her paws to slip and she plopped down onto her belly. Exertion, perhaps, or more likely to just be sheer clumsiness. But at a glance it was clear that the little one wasn't going to grow to be much more nimble on land. Her chubbiness and webbed paws were evidence of that.

Failure, Kimen did not stand and his accomplice was in the same stance as himself. It was then that he noticed its webbed feet. Strange, maybes it didn't belong on land?

Even though he fell flat on his chest once more he was too filled with determination and before the white creature had a chance to join him, he attempted to stand again. He put more pressure on his back legs and only used his front paws for balance.

Splayed out on her belly, indeed the little one didn't stand immediately. it seemed that either she was catching her breath or was simply being lazy, which was likely given the fact she wasn't panting. Raising a paw, she pawed dust specks off of her wiry whiskers before finally sitting up and looking at the fiery stranger.

She leaned in towards them but upon seeing the look on his face, she drew back. Perhaps she felt it wasn't her place to step in here, or perhaps she, again, was just being lazy. Her feet made little pattering sounds as she shifted from paw to paw, looking every bit as eager and determined as he seemed to be, despite the fact that she... you know, wasn't really doing much. "Go, go! Up up! I can help, I can help!" And with that, the otter finally pressed her hard head into his side.

Finally Kimen stood, tall and proud, on two paws instead of four. He used his large tail to help with balance but he couldn't hep but to feel rather uncomfortable in this position.

He gave his accomplace a smile in gratitude. At first they were an annoyance to him but now they had themselves quite useful. Perhaps it was better that they stayed and hadn't left him like he wanted before.

He was still filled with determination and there was no point in standing if he couldn't walk. Going against his instinct, he cautiously began to move forwards on two feet. Right foot, left foot. He stumbled slightly.

Maybes if I lowered my body? He tried this though it made his back haunched. Right foot, left foot. He walked another two steps, with more ease this time than the last. He covered no large distance, infact he hadn't moved far at all. Even lifting one leg was slow, especially when compared to the movement of his companion but he was still proud that he had over came the first obstacle in his life.

Odd. Very odd.

The snowy pup watched with no small amount of curiosity and confusion as the other stood, not on four paws, but on two. Now it was much bigger than her, towering over almost, and she felt a little intimidated, but was more interested in investigating the whys and hows. With paws pattering delicately on stone, she scurried around in a wide circle, looking very close and very curious, wondering if she could do that too.

When she finally looked up, she saw a small smile being offered. That was a first! Her cheeks twitched, and she beamed right back.

They began to move, and the whelp kept her distance, trotting a few steps ahead, keeping a close eye on the other. As she moved, she noticed the bejeweled crest upon one shoulder kept it rigid and awkward looking. Yes, moving like that seemed as though it'd be much better. Patiently, she plopped herself back on her haunches and waited for him to catch up, even though there was only a foot or so between them.

He looked down at his white companion, for once happy to see her. It was only then that he noticed the height he gained by standing on two paws and the size difference between himself and his company. He looked around and could see so much more than before. He even saw the creature's own crystal nest. Perhaps they weren't as different as he first thought.

He span around with slight unease, wobbling about slowly on the spot. He gave everything a look twice over, even grey and uninteresting rocks. Everything seemed to be new and exciting now. Then out of the corner of his eye he spotted a gap. A way out and possibly the source of the awful windy noise that had been present since he hatched.

He made way towards the gap, leaving his friend behind without realising. Getting closer to the gap, he shouted in excitement to get his friend to come over, "Here!"

The otter waited at first patiently, and then with some fidgeting, as the other looked around in a way that seemed to take forever. She wasn't the world's most attentive thing and soon got distracted by the sparkling chrysalis the other had left behind, something that she'd probably noticed earlier but had forgotten about. So pretty... And it looked like some of the shards would be small enough to pick up...

The otter waddled forward curiously, but by the time she looked back she found she'd been left behind, and let out a little squeak of protest. Left briefly behind perhaps, but not forgotten it seemed. A strange noise met her ears, yet one vaguely familiar; similar to what she instinctively barked without really thinking about it.

She took a while to process the sound of the voice, but it was half-drowned by the sound of the howling winds and she couldn't do much to reconsider. "Ei-r-e? What's that?" she called at the top of her high pitched voice, quickly catching up and looking at the other curiously, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Is... that me?" Suddenly her eyes glowed with pride.

His companion did not seem to understand what he said and stood where it was. He decided to try and climb up towards the opening though problematically it was just out of his grasp, even when standing on two legs. He tried to catch a ledge to try pull himself up but with one immobile paw, it was useless. The opening was only a couple of centimetres above but even still he couldn't help feeling defeated.

He had only just learned how to walk though that seemed hopeless now as he was enclosed by the stone walls around him.
But he wasn't going to give up now. He mustered all the strength he could to jump from his back legs. With one paw he managed to catch the ledge of the opening. But what now? he panicked, not thinking that he'd actually get this far. He was certain that he could only hold on for so long. "Help!" he shouted, hoping that his companion would hear him this time.

Eire? Eire. Eira. That was it.

The little one knew what he'd said now, and her fur quivered with excitement all along her spine. As her attention turned back to the other, the newly-named Eira realized as she looked up what they were trying to do and bounded over after him, looking up towards the tall ledge that seemed to lead out to another part of the cave.

Her eyes glinted with concentration as she placed both paws on a tiny ledge just by her chest, but... that was it. Not many other ledges that would be easy to reach. Just a couple of finger-thin ridges, although... her paws were made for grasping slippery rocks and fish. She grasped a smaller ledge, and pulled up her back paws so that they were up there on the last one. It was sharp and unpleasant, like the other's gem had been, and she nearly just turned back, because that would be far easier.

Stubbornly though, she kept a hold and then went rigid in shock as a sharp yelp cut through the air. Eira turned to see her companion hanging from the edge of the gorge by a single paw. She was almost up there, too! One final heave and she was up, shot over and grabbed the red panda's scruff with her sharp little teeth. Maybe it kept him up there but... he wasn't gonna move unless she did something.

Trying desperately the young panda searched with his toes to find a place he could push himself upwards. He couldn't find anything within reach. Once or twice he put his trust in a few edges below his feet and they fell away under him. With one front paw, this tiny tiny climb was a huge task.

His companion was holding him up with by his scruff and he appreciated the help but he had no idea how they would get out of this difficult situation.
