... The bones were talking not just about Bevy. They were talking about the whole of Bevy. The thought made Ratchie pause, deciding the ramifications about this... There was, perhaps, Calypso. Or the other one... Or even just them and Enna. Even still, it was possible that the bones meant Makyna, but the lioness was Bevy's friend. Sure they had their problems but no, it only made sense that the bones meant her. Meant them. All of them.
Ratchie tilted their head and tried to decide how to explain... If they even wanted to. "It's complicated, see... Right, uh. We're Bevy, right? And I'm Ratchie. There's Enna, you met her before, and there's a little-voice and also, well, Calypso... Caly doesn't play so nice all the time. If I had to guess the bones mean all of us. We all share this body but we're different... I don't think many other gembound are like us, and well we don't know how to talk about it.. Or even how to bring it up." They paused for a moment, nervously chirping softly to themselves as the looked around at the bones scattered on the floors.
"We, uh, y'see. We haven't even told anyone, yet. You're the first.. I guess Cancer kinda knows, but not many others. It's a bit weird." They paused, hopping up to the remains of the wing bone, eyeing where the bits had scattered. They remembered not to touch; the hyena had been quite specific on that one. They turned to look back at her now, wondering what she thought of their weird, fractured personality... Or.. Whatever it was.

Giggle cocked her head slightly as she listened, thinking over Bevy's words. For a long moment, she pondered them, even after Bevy was finished, just mulling it over.
"You sounded different," she at last said slowly. And then, without saying more--at least not yet--she turned to face the bones. For awhile, she simply stared at them, as if holding a conversation (which only she could hear) with the inanimate symbols of death. Finally, and again very slowly, she turned her head to stare back at Bevy.
""Spirits can't die. They're taken up, reborn. They fall away and they come back. Maybe they hang around bones to teach us." She looked down at the bones, staring for another moment of silence, and then at Bevy, blinking as she thought. She seemed to have simply accepted this idea--no questions, no disbelief, no curiosity as to what it was like to share a body with others. Indeed, she seemed to be almost in a trance.
"The spirits help us. Guide us. Maybe there are more spirits than bodies. Maybe many cooperated and needed to come into this world at once, for some greater reason. Maybe they chose one body, so that they could work together--remain together. Or because their task was so urgent, they couldn't wait for more bodies. This, I don't know. But this, I do know: they must learn to cooperate, to strengthen one another. And the bones speak also of... of nourishing. Healing. Like--... A mother." Giggle paused, lowering herself carefully to sit on her haunches. She didn't approach Bevy further, instead simply watching her from a distance. "Maybe their job is something like that."
And with this--for now--she fell silent, her full and attentive gaze on the little black-and-scarlet bird.

So it was noticeable. Ratchie felt slightly reassured that even an almost stranger had noticed the difference, though they did not speak at first. They simply listened, although they had much to say. They wanted to talk about themselves, about the others, in great detail and for possibly the rest of the afternoon, but they held back. Giggle's explaination seemed to ease more of their worries, a calm answer to the great Why that hung over the young pitohui bird since she was born.
It all sounded much bigger than one tiny bird could handle, even if she had many different... Spirits... To guide her. Ratchie wondered why Calypso didn't get along with them, if they were supposed to be working together. "We'll have to work on it then," they replied, their eyes searching the bones for more answers, even if the hyena seemed to be the only one who could see them. Nourishing, healing, mothers. It all sounded like Enna to a T, but... But Ratchie wasn't sure that was what they wanted. It certainly wasn't what Calypso wanted...
"... It will be difficult to convince all of us," they continued, their voice taking on a lighter, softer pitch. "All I want is to protect my family. Make sure they're okay, that they're safe."
Worry. A faint, slight tremble to the sweet voice. "Our family is falling apart, I can feel it. Giggle, how do I stop them... How do I keep them together? Never mind myself.. I don't care. I don't care if I fall apart, I have to help my family. I'll fix me after I fix this. Ask the bones about Maji Walezi. Please."

Again, she listened to the bird's request. Again, she appeared unmoved--only thoughtful. And perhaps that was a better way to honor Bevy's suddenly-exposed raw concern than simply offering pity. No, Giggle could do more. She could help. Like a doctor grimly working on a patient, she turned and looked down again upon the bones, stepping down from her boulder to pace around the pit.
"I don't know what this Maji Walezi is, but I will look, for you. The bones will aid." She sounded very confident in this.
The hyena eyed the pit, then abruptly selected the new and heavy bone that Bevy had found her dragging in. She seized it in her jaws and dragged it, having to straddle it slightly, firing Bevy a look that seemed somehow both knowing and amused--like the two had shared some secret joke.
Then she was looking away, hauling the bone up the boulder, and tossing it down into the pit.
The clatter this time was horrific, with the heavy bone sending many others flying and spinning straight out of the pit, though not hard enough to harm Bevy should they come close. Others rocked and clattered, and Giggle laid down, crossing her front paws, staring down at her work.
"I see problems. A home filled with trouble, yet you can't--or won't--get away. There are unions, some seeming broken, but they cannot truly be undone. And I see again the tangles. Maybe this Walezi is what the bones meant: they must learn to work together."
Giggle's voice grew softer, and more distant.
"As to your role in it, little bird--little flock--take a chance. Play a game. It may seem small, you may seem small--but it may do much to aid them. When this Walezi faces this challenge, they must meet the obstacle head-on. No shying away, and no wavering. Play a game, Bevy."
Giggle looked up, staring at the bird. "You might have to teach them to have fun together. Do you get along? Do you have fun--your spirits, in one body?"

The noise was awful and like any small prey-like animal the bird took to the air at the noise, frantically fluttering away from the sudden thrash of noise that filled the air. She landed as the bones settled, feeling a bit weak on her legs as she perched as close to the bone pile as she dared. She was not as brave as some of her could be. That had truly startled her, but...
Bevy's eyes met Giggle's and dread filled her. Maji Walezi was full of trouble. Everyone was shattering but.. But there was... A slight hope, wasn't there? They couldn't become completely separate, undone. There was a chance to fix everyone, everything. She had to hope for this, the tiny bird giving a slight nod of her beak towards the much larger hyena.
"A game?..." Her voice came, sounding a bit hoarse. It was almost ironic. A game had only fractured them more. Cancer had been cruel and Leon had left. Makyna hadn't been around much since, and... It was just a mess. Suggesting a game was almost a sick, twisted joke, though she didn't dare say so. "I'm not sure," she peeped. "My friends don't get along well enough to play games..."
"But... We, me and the other, um, spirits.. Get along," she chirped, soft and shy. "We do..." She couldn't help but remember all of the times that someone else had taken charge and had done something dangerous or taken her far from her home, and fun... Fun was not what that was, certainly. Enna did her best not to think about that too much. She loved her headmates, her other spirits, just as she loved her family. That didn't mean she always liked what they did. "We don't really play together, though... One of us takes control, otherwise it.. it messes up." She couldn't lie, as much as she wanted to pretend it was all okay. There were things she didn't like about sharing.
"... It's learning how to fly-- um, walk," she added in, quietly, as if that explained the situation. "Necessary, but not easy. Not fun. You do it because you have to, and.. And it's not hard to try, but it's hard to enjoy it."
Tilting her head, she sounded almost amused as she finished clarifying, "it would be worse if you were trying to walk with only one leg while the other moved on its own. Easiest to just let one do the walking."

Giggle stayed still and quiet for as long as Bevy spoke. When the bird finished, Giggle seemed to think, then nod slightly and speak. But now she did not look to the bones, but to Bevy; now she was not spewing prophecy, but merely holding conversation.
"It sounds something like a whole family trying to make a decision together. It must be hard under pressure. You would argue while an emergency destroyed you, if you didn't give one the lead, I imagine?"
The hyena sighed through her nose as she thought, dark cunning eyes fixed on Bevy.
"Have you tried to have fun? Not with just living and learning to 'fly,' but just... having fun. With yourself. With all your selves?" Giggle shrugged, a little. "A game, like I said. Or jokes. Tell stories to yourself? Guessing games? Or can you not hide things from--yourself?"
I wonder if it is just madness? I don't think it is. But it could be...?

Well that answer was simple. Bevy replied as a small child would to a school teacher asking for the truth: with a tiny, mumbly voice. "... No." She hadn't tried... She had never thought of such a thing. She spent most of her time, well.. Worrying, she supposed. Watching. Protecting. She never spent much time just idle with her thoughts, and the thoughts of her other selves.
And in that moment it seemed quite silly she had never treated Ratchie or the others like she treated her other friends. With kind, quiet, pleasant chatter. Offering to do fun things. They went off and did things sort of together because they had to, but never did they just "hang out". It was absolutely ridiculous.
"... I'll try it," she decided, gently, spreading her wings-- and then putting them back at her sides, thinking over one more thing she mentioned. The last thing. They kept all sorts of secrets from one another, though she didn't like that very much and rather encouraged the opposite. "I guess it wouldn't be too hard. Um... Thank you, Giggle. If you hear from Aza'zel, um, maybe let me know?" To be fair, she would probably see Aza herself before she saw Giggle again, but still.
"Oh! And um, if I find any cool bones, I'll bring them to you, if you'd like. As proper thanks."

Giggle burst into hearty laughter, inasmuch as hyena cackling can sound like laughter--though unlike her normal, frustrated-or-nervous-hyena-giggles, this was genuine amusement. She eyed Bevy with a leering grin, all her thick fangs bared.
"Yes, Bevy, please--do bring me bones. That would be a great gift."
And there wasn't much else to say, was there? Giggle lay staring and grinning at the little bird, the expression bordering on bloodthirsty or unpleasant. No "fly safe," no "come back soon"--just the grinning hyena watching her little bird friend. Or should that be, "friends?" Looking at her, one might be forgiven for thinking that Giggle was plotting unsavory plots or grimacing in hatred. In reality, her thoughts were far more mundane.
I wonder what kinds of bones she will bring?!

It was a good thing that Bevy only saw the best in people, unless forced to see the worst. The laugh made her skin crawl, but she felt quite blissful hearing it. After all, laughter was a friendly noise. The hyena seemed quite glad for this offer, and so she nodded and decided now it was best to leave the hyena. She had much to think about, and much to try. Games, for one.
"I will. See you," she peeped shortly, taking wing once more. She swept over the vast pile of bones, giving them one lost look as if now she would see the truth for what it was. They were simply bones to her, however, bones that tasted bad and made her feel slightly ill. Yes, she wanted to go home now. Perhaps Cancer would have something to say about all of this... Though the tiny bird had a feeling she would have just as much a hard time telling him about this as she had about her multiple spirits.
The pitohui bird flew off, back to the open maw, to escape the giant belly of bones and return to a place that felt less like death and more like life, more like home. She had pieces to pick up and put back together.
