Nox's jaws parted further and she continued to watch the little bird as he ran and, unbeknownst to her, struggled to hide. But she could still see him, so she lowered her head down and rested her chin on the ground next to him. She tried to still her skin, and rumbled quietly. For a while she thought, watching the young one closely.

And then she had an idea. She closed her jaws, lowering her massive bulk onto the ground as though she were nothing more than a towering pile of slime. "I'm ssssssorry," she murmured, low hisses and soft rumbles reverberating from deep in her throat. She didn't wish to gaslight the young one. She had brought him here to keep him safe, but she was afraid of what would happen should he have to survive on his own. Nox knew the marsh. Nox knew its dangers. She knew that she was safe from them. But a tiny, warm little creature like this would never be truly safe. "I did not mean to... ssscare. Wished to... Protect. "

Hikari peered up at the draconian from his hiding place, still unwilling to leave the brush. His eyes watered, again. "You killed it." he began, slowly, as if the past events of today hadn't yet caught up with him yet.

"You- you killed it! You killed the bird!" Accusing words began to stream from his mouth. "It had little chicks! I could hear them, calling! You killed it and now they have no mommy!"

He took a pause for breath. "You- you-" Hikari choked on his voice, unable to find the words to continue.

His tirade devolved into sorrow, tears running down his face and staining his feathers. "I connected with it. I- I felt it. It was so desperate. It- I think- I think it wanted to protect its family."

"And- and you killed it. I felt it die. I- I felt it die. You killed it."

He repeated those three, simple words under his breath, like a shield protecting him from the reality of things. "You killed it. You killed it. You killed it."

Nox's jaws parted for a moment, skin shivering softly. She had killed it, the draconian thought slowly, with a wash of dismay. Hikari was angry, and fearful for the chicks- the little ones that Nox had barely given a second thought. Finally, though, she put two and two together, her skin shuddering with guilt. She looked down at him before her jaws closed, throat flexing in preparation to speak.

"It got too clossssse," she gurgled quietly, voice even. "If it had killed you, I would have been alone again. I would have had nothing." Nox remembered the fear and rage that filled her as the bird came to the ground far too close to the little bird, as she feared seeing what that sharp beak could do to one so small. "We can go back for them."

She fell silent as Hikari described connecting with the creature with magic- a magic that was alien to her as every other magic, and frightened her just as much. She felt what remained of the bird lying heavy in her gizzard and on her mind. She had done wrong. Words failed her. Regret seethed until it became almost a physical sensation of discomfort, like nothing she'd ever felt before. Surely there was something she could do? But nothing sprung to mind. The heat mounted within her, and lingered deep within. It was an unusual, confusing sensation.

But still, there was nothing she could do that would make up for putting Hikari through another's death. "I'm ssssorry."

Ever-so-slowly, Hikari edged out of his 'hiding place'. She.. she really loved him that much? So much she had killed for him?

He hesitated, fear flaring. What if this was all just a clever ruse? She had killed- was she really to be trusted?

But, no, it wasn't, he thought. She could've eaten him, instead of staying to explain. She could've swallowed him whole- but she didn't. She wouldn't. He took another step forward.

"I forgive you." the peachick said at last, staring down at the ground. "Let's go back home."

Nox felt her skin ripple with elation and relief as the little one finally emerged, and she rumbled encouragingly, dropping her head down just a little nearer to look at him once again. And his words sent a surge of joy flooding throughout her- numbing momentarily the flood of guilt. Had she been able, the great draconian might have lowered her head and nuzzled him, but coated with slime, she could not.

But his other words stirred something. “Home?” She rumbled softly, with a long pause. “Where is ‘home’?” But after another long pause, Nox turned her head back towards the tree where the nest still sat- now just a faint shape in the thick mist. After some hesitation she moved back towards it, turning with slow steps and moving with long strides until it loomed out of the mist. She reached out, stretching her long neck towards the base of the branch containing the nest, and, even though the little ones set up a chorus of protests, pulled- trying to break the branch free.

But she only succeeded in gently rocking it, in her efforts to not disturb the chicks huddled within. Eventually she let go and looked towards Hikari, hoping the chick could see what she was trying to do.

Hikari had to run to keep up with Nox's long strides, watching anxiously as she made her way towards the next.

A flash of fear engulfed him as he watched her reach up towards the branch--what was she going to do to them?!--but it subsided as he realized just how much care she was taking to not disturb the little chicks.

He looked up at the birdies, fluttering his wings instinctively. He wanted to be up there with them, to talk to them and reassure them that everything was alright, and the dragon was just bringing the nest down so she could take care of them. But the nest remained far out of reach, and he remained firmly grounded.

Finally, as she realized that Hikari understood her intent, Nox turned back towards the branch, fastened her beak upon it and pulled. With a hearty crack, Nox felt herself taking on its weight, and her jelly-like neck struggled for a moment to keep the nest stable. She heard the little ones set up a little storm of cheeping as she lowered her head towards the ground, placing the nest next to Hikari.

The draconian creature then raised her head and peered into it at the little lives inside, jaws parted, before looking at Hikari. Then she looked back at the nest. What could they do? Nox was unprepared, but willing to do anything she needed to do to help. After a moment of consideration, Nox backed off, extended her forepaws ahead of her, and lay down with wings folding across her back, tail curling up behind her.

With a soothing rumble she watched.

He toddled up to the chicks, eyes wide as he watched them call out for Mommy. A pang of sadness hit his heart--their Mom was dead, now, and he couldn't bring her back. But, maybe, he could do something else for them?

Hikari walked up to the nest, trying his best to be a calming presence to them. "Sssh, ssh--it's okay. You're okay. I can help you. What do you need?"

The little ones shied in fear of the ominous shadow looming over them. The vibrations of her throaty rumbles set them shivering right through to their bones, even if they were too young to understand just what this horror had done, or the danger that she could pose. But, the comforting voice of Hikari was enough to soothe their frantic cheeping for a moment. And as the little peachick approached the nest, close enough that his shadow fell upon them, well...

They quickly started again, peeping voices high and frantic, because they knew what the shape of a bird over the nest meant, and they were ready.

Three tiny beaks gaping cavernously wide, they called shrilly, their frantic desperation a direct contrast to their plump and fluffy little bodies. Clearly, they either didn't know the difference between Hikari and their mother, or they'd already taken a shine to the peachick, accepting him as one of their own. The little ones scrambled over one another as they fought to be the closest to their newly-accepted mommy, and the first to earn a well-deserved meal.

Nox watched with alien intentness, unblinking and unmoving, with her skin softly rippling. She watched her son approach the nest and the little creatures cry up a storm, and their gaping mouths told her everything that she needed to know. She gave another soft rumble- a beckoning, perhaps, as she eased herself to her paws with legs bending beneath her weight. Soon, she was moving away from the nest, jaws parted, and head low to the ground as she searched for something.

She was certain she knew what birds ate; and it shouldn't be too hard to find some. She didn't have to venture far before she found a stone, half-submerged in the marshy soil. Raising one wing, Nox placed her forepaw upon the hard surface of the stone- and then heaved. Although the rock was small in comparison to her, she still found it a bit of a strain- her bones bent slightly out of shape before the rock was flipped.

Finally after a few long moments it turned over, sending woodlice scattering and millipedes fleeing their slow way, and a couple of small worms thrashing in the muck. Nox felt satisfied. She backed away, leaving the stone upturned, for Hikari to take from. She wouldn't be able to feed the chicks- not with her slime. and not after what she'd done. She hoped it would be enough. But for now, Nox could feel her slime growing thick and viscous, her steps laced with exhaustion. The hallowed caller's corpse had brought some strength to her limbs but it had served as a reminder of how far she had travelled, and how long it had been since last she ate.

Slowly- the draconian creature returned to watch the chicks in their little nest. She would wait for Hikari's return, and then she would have to go, fading back into the marshes like a ghost, to nourish- and to find somewhere that she could hide the labradorite she'd found... and perhaps, just perhaps, what remained of the Caller as well.
