After she'd told Manna about <thk>Hume</thk> for the first time, Manna had told her about the water cycle. It was something the jaguar had observed from living and wandering through so many water-filled caves. The rains started, dropping fresh water onto Fornax's oceanic basin. The basin overflowed for a time, before all the new water drained down into the rest of the caves below. But rain, as Maw likely knew, had to come from somewhere. Water in the air, Maw had told her, and she'd given her a particular smile. Exactly. Water in the air, which came from the basin, condensed, and fell back down upon itself.

The comet, and the cyclical remaking of <thk>Hume</thk>, could be just like that. A cycle, after cycle, after cycle. Going nowhere, sustaining itself. And was that not how life was produced? Bodies made for passing water and air in and out and through. Life was the box of noise between two flat lines of entropy. The reason it didn't go anywhere was because it couldn't. Circles have no ends.

Since then, Maw had created a routine for herself in Fornax. She'd visit Manna, check the neonates, pet and scratch Manna's various itches and favorite spots. Maw had taken it upon herself to learn to read, as well. Since she had that book from one of her wishes. Maw had come to enjoy it, far more than speaking, or brooding, or anything else really. She had learned, so far, about the butterflies and the bees. Literally! They were pollinators! And a little about the plants they liked on Earth.

Earth was so far away from this place, in mind, body, and spirit. Did those little Humans even know? Did they ever learn about the things beyond that fateful little rock of theirs, adrift in space? Did they ever wonder about her, in turn?

Maw's mind felt so compressed by all the knowledge it now held within. She had to get it out—she had to. And with every passing day, the Coil bound itself tighter around her chest and throat, and Manna had to physically stop her from running out the den and never coming back. She just had to tell them, to tell them all. And maybe, once everyone knew, she could finally be at peace and return to her normal life, of wallowing in melancholy, and missing the children she never had.

She hadn't been to Pegasus in a while. She hadn't gone to the secret refuge in—maybe ever. The creatures of Chaos had been her constant companion, ever since her kittenhood. Ever since... Doug. And she'd never wanted to abandon him, even after leaving Pegasus. Leaving him behind.

Maw walked until she saw something so gripping, it ripped her straight out of her thoughts. The cathedral that shined with the same pink-gold as the nebula caught in her chrysoberyl hand. She had to enter—she wanted to. Desperately.

She wandered its halls, reverent with awe, jaw ever so slightly agape. She wandered until she found the series of pagodas. She wandered through them, taking in that ever-present scent of flowers and greenery (attempting to feed their life and passing on unfazed when nothing came of it), until she came to the biggest one. She wandered in, and within moments of seeing it felt so overwhelmed, her soul might rip itself to pieces. Her life, her <thk>God</thk>; depicted here, in stone. She'd never been here before. How had she never been here?
She sat silent, a little ways from the Shrine, far enough that no light would blind her to this sky. The gemstone at her chest sparkled in the starlight, and she tried to memorize these new stars. It felt like everything she'd ever known was coalescing, swirling to make some new and more coherent truth, something she'd never really understood but... might, if she stared long enough. If she learned what the stars had to teach.
She felt dizzy, sometimes. Like if she sat here too long, she might fall up, into that dark, and be lost in whatever lay between those lights.

Discovery number one: there was a second palace in the room neighboring the one with the first palace (Cepheus), which felt a bit excessive to October, but it would not question this too much. This one was prettier than the other one, anyway; it was not weirdly dim in a way that begged October to set things on fire (to light things up, of course), and it was wreathed in pretty pink-gold light.

Discovery number two: there was a portal in the palace. October didn't think much of anything happened when it went through it at first. There was just a brief warping as it was suddenly subjected to... something. It wasn't sure what, as its surroundings before and after it interacted with the portal remained exactly the same.

When it tried to find its way back out, though, it emerged from the palace into a... room...? that was not at all like Pegasus. October flew in several circles, trilling in confusion. It looked in every possible direction, but none of them looked like the room it had just come from. Similar, yes, with the meadows and forests, but not the same. The familiar herds of Meadow Deer, for one thing, were nowhere in sight.

And... that giant flaming orb up above, which hurt its eyes to look at... could that be the sun the Three Kings had described? No, that couldn't be right, hadn't they said it was of a place far from here? So how could October be seeing it now? But it did look exactly like their stories said. October tried looking at it again, but it was so bright that even it, who was used to the pain of fire magic, could not bear it for long. They blinked and averted their gaze again, bright spots burned into their vision that would take minutes to fully fade.

There was one last thing left to test. The sky—was it truly a 'sky' with nothing above it? This was unimaginable. It tried to fly higher and higher, to see if there was truly no rock ceiling, but its wings tired and flagged before it would have even reached the height of the ceilings in one of the normal cave rooms. Still, its golden eyes found no rock above in sight.
Surely the Kings would want to know about this! It must be exactly the place they had told of in their stories. Now if only October could find the way back...

NPC: Meissa

Meissa had received a very special gift! It was a very pretty feather! A robed visitor handed it to her and said it would grant her any wish she could ever think of but she had to use it carefully. Oooh, she had been so excited! Of course dad was wary, so Meissa had to skitter away and admire it elsewhere. She really liked the fluffy comfy room full of pillows and silks in the cathedral so that was where she buried herself now, holding the feather between her paws and rubbing it between her pads so that it sent flecks of sparkling, starry dust scattering everywhere.

Amun had come back here to sleep, so she had rested herself beside their chrysalis; sometimes she did this and blabbered about nothing, like storytelling, because of course Amun's hibernating body would want to hear all about her stories. Wow, what would she wish for! She was grinning ear-to-ear, looking about the room with her legs splayed out behind her, tail brushing idly along the pillows.

She fluttered to her feet suddenly, her butterfly-like wings lifting her up quickly as she let the feather rest on the silk beneath her.

Amun was supposed to be super powerful, right!? A king of the gods!? Then they should know how to use ALL the elements, right? Except the WEIRD ones!

"Okay special feather, I know what I want!" she announced proudly, then closed her eyes and puffed out her chest. "I WISH..." she began, squeezing her eyes shut more. "I WISH AMUN KNEW EVERY SPELL!!! But not the scary ones!"

With a pop and fizz, the wishfeather disintegrated in a puff of cosmic purple-gold stars. Amun's chrysalis surged with an influx of mana. Circling around it were swirling, soft clouds glittering with tiny, sparkling stars of lilac and gold—Amun would wake with the knowledge of every elemental spell, although they'd still only be a Fledgling...

Meissa's eyes blinked rapidly and she skipped around the room in gliding flutters.

"Yay! Yippe! Wow!" she barked, doing circles around the chrysalis. "Wahoo! Good for you Amun! How cool! The King of the Gods! The King of the Gods!"

She would tire out soon enough and although she napped near the chrysalis for some time, the newly-imparted magic would take a while to weave its way into Amun's being. So, sadly, Meissa had to take her leave of the cathedral and return home lest her dad grow angry with her for being away too long.

Ah... ten years. Fashioned in its normal black robe with the hood drawn tight around its lion-skull face, the Visitor made its way through the garden of the Secret Refuge as sneakily as possible. But of course, nothing could tiptoe through her father's garden without her knowing!
"Hey!" she chirped, fluttering and hopping through the flowers to catch up to it. What WAS that? "Hey! Stop!"

The Visitor drew its head into its shoulders and hunched itself over, turning slightly to peek at her from the corner of its hood.

"What are you! That's so weird! WHERE is your FACE!" she blurted, scuttling up to circle the creature that very clearly did not want to be circled, or have any attention drawn to it at all.

"Shh, shh," the Visitor hushed, holding its notebook away from her and gesturing downward with its palm—a gloved hand.
Meissa was still for a moment and the Visitor breathed a sigh of relief—"WHERE IS YOUR FACE?"

"Oh, my god." The Visitor brought its hand up to pinch its brow, its glowing red orbs-for-eyes blinking off momentarily as if its eyes had shut.

"What happened to your face! You just have a skull!" she cried, increasingly worried the creature was injured. "I'm bad at healing but I'm learning! I can try to help you!"

"No, please, shut up, for the love of—"

"DAD!!!" Meissa hollered, throwing her head back and shouting at loud as her little body would let her.

"Nononono," the Visitor urged, kneeling down so that they could be eye-to-eye. "Shhh, Meissa, listen to me—"

"YOU KNOW MY NAME!?" Meissa exclaimed and her eyes nearly bulged out of her head. Even louder than before, she yelled for her father, turning to view his pond: "DAD! DAD THERE'S A WEIRD THING OUT HERE!"

But when she turned back, the Visitor was gone. Lyn lifted his head from the water, and when he saw nothing of note, he snorted. Kids, right? He chirruped her way to soothe her, but she was utterly distraught. As they were bickering about whether or not she had really seen something, the Visitor exited the refuge in a secluded corner...

----------------------------

As much as they loved Meissa, the Visitor was not prepared to engage her this time. It wormed its way through an empty hollow in the cave wall and then flipped its notebook open to a seemingly random page. Hmm, yes, yes...

"I wish..." it started, pulling the notebook closer to its face. Damn. Did it need its glasses here, too? "I wish for the gembound... Oh, right." From its pocket it pulled out a glittering feathershard and held the cosmic wonder in the palm of its hand. On the palm of the other rested its notebook. "I wish for the gembound to see the surface of Let!"

With that, the feathershard puffed and sparked before dissipating into a cloud of pink-gold stars. Then the cave filled with the same pink-gold, like a nebula birthed in the darkness—before the Visitor could react, it was standing before a large cathedral with flowering trees and plants in its yard.

"Ohhhhh," it started, but its body was frozen, almost as if it did not expect this outcome. "Hmmmm... Yeah... Cool, cool, cool, no doubt, no doubt," it muttered as it walked forward, nodding as it looked to different items, touching some to make sure they were real. Hmm. Yeah, that happened. Wow! That totally worked. Sick.

The door to the cathedral was just an open aperture and surprisingly large: large enough to fit a dragon, probably! Inside it was warm and glowing with the same pink-gold nebula that swirled through the air outside. Its ceiling was bordered by flowering trees whose petals fell loosely, but the branches would never be bare, backlit by lights unseen. The hall itself was sprawling and open with no pews and few pillars. At its end was a massive, slowly swirling portal that shimmered with the murky image of the same hall, but mirrored: beyond the portal was the cathedral as it sat on the surface of Let, gouged into a hidden mountainside.

There were probably more places to see and discover within its walls: what kind of rooms were in its towers, the Visitor wondered? But it did not want to overstay its welcome.

"Sorry, no snacks this time," it said to itself, ducking behind one of the pillars to open its own portal home. "Haha." Nobody actually says haha, but it did. It reached down to grab one of the flower petals before summoning its rift to home. "Aaaaall right, back to it then," it sighed and stepped into the rift that closed behind it. Gone.

----------------------------

"NO WAY! WHAT THE BANANAS!" Meissa barked as she entered the cathedral grounds.

Lyn snapped a hard chirp her way, warning her not to go further; he was surprised the cave was large enough for him, but even then, he was cautious. His daughter turned to give him a sour look but he shook his head at her. A series of chirpy mutterings explained to her they should let the gembound explore this area first, and in fact, he had received a dream that they should wait for a specific one: a black cat—Rhodonite. They'd return to the garden and wait for her there.

Meissa's eyebrows arched and she nodded quickly, following her father back into the refuge to wait for their guest.

Ah...
