She was not looking at all, too busy hiding behind Howler as others filtered into the room. They didn't need to see her. They didn't need to know her. She sobbed softly, content to stay behind him for now, but every so often casting quick glances at Flower from around the werewolf's side. She was being nice too. It was weird that people were being nice.

But of course this moment wasn't going to last.

Movement suddenly exploded around her and Howler was gone. Too slow to react, without forewarning, Rosary simply raised her head in surprise as a small dinosaur suddenly collided with her. Before she could react, teeth were sinking into the exposed skin of her chest and she was rearing back with an angry howl. Extremely un-horse-like.

The skrungler was off her before she could retaliate but it had already spooked her thoroughly. She took off in a direction - thankfully, it was the forward one and not the back, managing to dodge out of the way of the other small creatures flying past, but the first one had done its work. Her head was already beginning to pound and the shadows were growing thicker around her. She ended up running right into Howler, desperately searching for white among the dark greens and finding him, but her eyes were wild, oil was leaking from her jaws, mixing with the black blood dribbling down her front. "What...what is that...what....WHAT" razor-teeth gnashed in her irritation and panic as she unsteadily stepped around nervously. She was properly alert now...alert and terrified.

@Howler @Flower
Naskarra plodded up to the nests, unafraid. She sniffed the eggs, taking an untouched one into her jaws. She heard a rustling sound all around her. Without missing a beat, Naskarra's head whipped from bush to bush. She stepped back, her jaws open in warning, the egg splattering to the ground, forgotten.

She had been expecting something larger to shoot out. Instead, it was a swarm of tiny, awkward looking things. The skrunglers swarmed those around her, leaving her untouched, and the ones that approached she warded off with a snap of her jaws. She wasn't satisfied though--Naskarra was hungry. Naskarra sped after the skrunglers, drooling. She neared one and snapped her jaws on empty air. There was another, and she ran after it, but it disappeared as a flash in the bushes. A third escaped before she even turned to chase. For all her speed, the skrunglers had twice her agility, and she was deep in their territory. Catching one was like trying to cup water with an open hand. Stubbornly, she chased them until they'd all dissapeared somewhere, and even then she sniffed at the holes they'd crawled into. She growled some annoyed thing under her breath.

In a rotten mood now, and likely behind the rest of the party, Naskarra stomped after the gang ahead, (but not after grabbing a mouthful of those small, speckled eggs). She stared at the shorter members of the group, her green slits betraying no outward emotion, but a want easy to guess.

((Edited to have naskarra grab egg because i forgor and theyre right there))

Khavur's magic failed him, inducing a mild headache distracting enough to mess with his reflexes. He hadn't even realized the Skrunglers were coming in droves until a... bear warrior? had already come to his aid to stop them. He offered a head dip and a brief, curt, "Thank you," while the stunned expression was still slowly wearing off his face.

Ahead there was a gate, and a bunch of now-abandoned Skrungler nests. Obviously Khavur would be going forward despite the... relatively low risk jumpscare- but perhaps it would be worth searching the nests before continuing?

OOC: Khavur is attempting to search the abandoned nests before going through the gate, just in case.
Its a good thing that Connie was able to spot the danger in time, because she was a perfect bite-sized snack for a hungry Skrungler. A burst of sheer terror sent her flying forward- more metaphorically than literally, since she was still getting a hang of her new wings. She didn't stop to think about the others until she'd arrived at the gate up ahead, at which point she turned around to make sure everyone else had followed.

"I-is everyone alright?" She called, brow furrowed with worry and ears drooped with concern. She felt a shudder of deja-vu ripple through her spine. Those who DID get bit didn't seem to be hurt TOO badly, but she still felt a vague sense of betrayal. This was meant to be harmless fun!

Hunter barely had time to register the sudden, quick nip of the fleet-footed beasties. He had been paying too much attention to his baby brother to realize they were under attack, and the lessers were gone before he could even turn around. "Ow!" He said more out of reflex than anything else, and in a split second something else hits him like a truck.

Plover, specifically.

Teeth, much larger and with a lot more force behind them, sink deep into the meat of his arm as he tries to catch himself in the tumbling fall of the collision. Dazed, he barely has time to even register what has happened before Plover's spittle is mixing with his open wound, the child frantically apologizing.

Not intentional. It was an accident. He hears his father's voice, sharp and scolding, but Hunter's bicolored eyes settle on Plover's bloody face and he meets his adoptive brother with a wobbly smile. The muscles in his arm burn, and he's already forgotten the fact a wild animal had bit him moments prior. (There surely won't be consequences later.)

"It's fine, I'm fine," he raises his voice for Attikias more than anything, and he hastily takes his hands to try and cradle Plover's face. If Plover will let him, he tries to help wipe the blood from Plover's lips, and even pluck the errant hairs from between those teeth with a gentle kindness that hopefully soothes the baby brother. Its here that he notices that Plover has some scratches too from the Skrungler, and he mentally winces. Those have to sting...

"Hey, you didn't mean it," Hunter tells Plover in a soft, hushing tone, trying to smooth over the big-little guy's feelings. "Help me keep an eye out for some running water, and we can wash these out." Giving Plover a way to fix xir mistake will hopefully give xem some direction to put xir feelings toward. That always seemed to work for Hunter, anyway. It was hard having big, messy feelings when you were only a cycle old and didn't have the experience to navigate them.

For now, however, they had to keep moving. Part of the group had lurched ahead, so he offered his hand for Plover to hold (from his good arm) and started after the rest of them, eager to see what else the dungeon had to offer... Now with a good bit more caution for potential danger.

@Attikias @Plover
The last of the Skrunglers fled, their skittering footfalls (and in one case, trail of blood) leaving the room silent but for the Gembounds, and their nests briefly unguarded.

The group moved on.

A room of carved sandstone bricks lay ahead. This had once clearly been a part of the dungeon proper, and a similar if less... destroyed room probably lay in the non-overgrown reaches. But this one was pretty destroyed. Its bricks, massive in size, had been carefully carved and set in place and but for that, it would've been crumbled away long ago. As it was, much of the stone had deep furrows carved by the passage of water. The ceiling was half caved-in, bright light illuminating the center of the room and the Giant Statue standing there. Thick vines overgrew much of the room itself, and giant, perforated leaves made for a shifting jungle within the dungeon. Rubble from the ceiling formed loose piles, and there was a squeak and skitter as Red Mice scurried away into the room's corners, so that the whole place seemed half-reclaimed by nature.

The statue was notable for several reasons. First, it was immense, some fifteen feet tall and broad, likely weighing several tons. It was bipedal, with thick legs and huge feet carved from brick-like chunks. A head--stylized in a strange, vaguely tribal fashion--bore inset eyes formed of cut rubies, impossible to remove. A fan or headdress carved from stone made it seem larger than it was, and its mouth was a black, rectangular hole in the face. Its arms were wide, reaching, with four bricks for fingers. The statue-creature was carved to be topless, with humanoid stone features, and a carved 'skirt' that looked rather like it were meant to be made of woven grass.

The statue was also undamaged, mostly. That made it notable, too: rather than worn by wind and water that undoubtedly fell from above, it looked mostly... okay, really. Content, if a stone statue could be said to look content, except for maybe the dimly lit ruby eyes (ominous) and the black hole of a mouth (also sort of creepy).

Lastly, the statue was notable for the carvings at first nearly invisible in the shadows, beneath the leaves, along the walls. These carvings depicted the giant statue, and they depicted it in motion: one had it chasing and eating rodents. Another, scooping up and eating the very plants within this room. And a third, for some reason, depicted it... eating rocks?

This room had no visible exit.

Characters should roll to solve this room's puzzle. They may use their rolls to try and puzzle out the puzzle or, if they have already figured out what they need to do, they may use any roll type to try and fulfill the room's requirements.

As a reminder, characters bitten by Skrunglers will continue to hallucinate eldritch horrors beyond their imagining. Yay!

Naskarra has obtained three intact speckled Skrungler eggs. She may consume these for free protein, or keep and attempt to hatch them to obtain one or more pet Skrunglers. (GM Note: Skrunglers are very hard to house-train.) Khavur may also take one or more eggs, but does not find anything further in the nests. Just eggs. (They are nests. With eggs in them.)

The next post will take place in four days, on June 15th, afternoon/evening GMT.

And much like a dog, Plover winces and whines inward, feeling so, so very guilty in a way that xe would've thought unfathomable a week ago. Fish traps barely compare to this even if xir father reacts in about the same way. The fact that Hunter is just so gentle about it turns xem into a blubbering mess, frowning instead of grinning with those chompers for once. Shaky hands bat his away from xir wobbling lips, and xe finally manages to sob out a weak little "I'm s-so," (Pause to wheeze in.) "sorry, bubbyyy- hic!..."

From there, Hunter is successfully a soothing and guiding hand:

"Hey, you didn't mean it," Hunter assures. "I didn't mean it..." Plover hiccoughs in response.

"Help me keep an eye out..." "Hnnngh." Plover wheezes inward, pushing xemself onward and upward at last. "Hnngh. M'kay."

Xe takes his hand, at the very least, using its opposite to smudge away the tears from xir beady little eyes while trying to gather xemself back up (and STOP HICCUPING!!). There's not going to be any water-searching with so much in xir eyes.

It doesn't help that the scratches on xir face do sting, and there's a weird, fluttering feeling of panic in xir stomach like something's watching the two of them from the shadows still.

The banana hasn't been forgotten in Plover's misery, though, and xe tears it open to start chowing down on and muffle the last few of xir tears with. Xe is too focused on trying not to keep crying, on the task assigned to xem, and on feeling for Attikias's hand to hold as well to notice that xe starts glowing because of the sweet treat.

Steeled by the togetherness, Plover manages to stop sniffling by the time they reach the next room. Perfect, because xe assesses the space— BIG STATUE, DON'T HEAR ANY WATER, MORE SNACKS!!!— and promptly releases all three of its handholds (Attikias, Hunter and banana peel) to lurch, hungrily and on all sixes, toward the nearest corner full of Red Mice.

@Attikias @Hunter (Both for visibility).

Relic eyed the big, creepy statue with some suspicion. All of this was bringing back old memories, and not all of them were good - she recalled when the Oilstone spire had burst to life, and wondered if this rickety sentinel would do the same if they weren't careful.

A puzzle, with no passage to try to squeeze through this time - it hadn't worked the first she'd tried it, and it definitely wouldn't work now.

Relic was, instead, forced to actually solve this one as designed. This was not something she was used to, at all. She figured that maybe, she'd discover some previously hidden talent as she looked to the carvings, then back to the statue, then back to the carvings again - aha!

"I think... we're supposed to eat the statue?"

This room was odd, the statue the center of the attention. It was less rickety than some of the other things that had been seen thus far, and she took a moment to look up at the pictures, cocking her head to the side. She noticed one already trying to chase a mouse, though the voice of the other made her giggle softly, shaking her head gently and speaking almost motherly. I don't think that's quite what they mean. Perhaps we should feed those things to the statue?

She offered the suggestion, shrugging most to herself. Plants, she could do that. She began to try and carefully pick the flowers that the image showed, figuring that once a mouse was caught and put in the mouth of the statue, she could do the same with the flowers, and then she assumed... a rock?

@relic

A force smashes into Howler's back, dazing him for just a few moments. Thankfully, the threat truly is no threat at all and he comes face-to-face with Rosary. A very spooked Rosary. Howler isn't sure what the Lessers here could do, perfectly ignorant of their hallucinogens.

"It's okay Rosary." he says, holding up one hand palm-up and the other handling the wisp.

The gnashing teeth are admittedly scary, but Howler would rather get bitten than leave her in distress. Rosary must know they're gone now, but being bitten was probably scary regardless. "Just stay by me, okay?" With both of them keeping an eye out it might make things easier to dodge if more danger comes.

They now come into an area with puzzles. From looking, Howler can at least say they probably have to gather the items for the statue. At least, he thinks so.

The others have mostly figured it out while Howler put it together, so instead of telling them what they already know, he will help. "The order we need to do it is the same as the puzzle, I think."

So they have to start with the rats. Howler would rather not kill them - they've already scurried off - but a carnivore is going to carnivore. Howler has eaten them before. With another missing the catch, Howler tries on his own.
