Our last rat was called Blazelord Sugarbutt

so!

this is my oldest, spanky. she spends her time being near be but refusing to acknowledge me unless she wants canned food. apparently, she will only eat canned food now, and became entirely too skinny recently simply because she refuses to eat kibble. (this, of course, discovered after spending about $400 at the vet because I was worried about her losing weight). she also find great joy in laying on my tablet and/or mouse while I am using them.


the floofy one is cinnamon; the gray lump is Dr. House. Cinnamon is the most beautiful cat I have, the only one I have acquired intentionally, and is an 8 lb terrorist. Dr House is a very snuggly boy (yesterday I woke up to him spooning my head and snoring) and is quite behaved and beloved other than being a bitch if he isn't let outside every day. he makes up for it anyway because he runs up to greet me when I pull in the parking pad. Not that I had a choice; he literally just got into my house one day and demanded food (to be fair, I live in a student neighborhood and he appeared just after fall graduation so...)


This special little beast is Cat Stevens. Drunk Me acquired this one "accidentally" when someone in my department couldn't keep him and asked me if I wanted a cat (sigh). He's probably the most strange animal I've had, but he's pretty cute and sweet so his curtain-climbing, food stealing, generally idiotic antics are just part of the deal. A few weeks ago he somehow got inside my futon and became so entangled that I literally had to cut him out.


finally, this is my youngest shite, the little tortie. Her name is Nya, to be pronounced anime cat girl style (see also: shrieked). She is probably also the best behaved of my terrible children and is incredibly sweet without damaging my house constantly. who knew that could be a thing?

and yesssss there is much eating in food science
unfortunately also a lot of chickens as my department is paired with poultry science
but I like chicken, so s'alright

Oh wow, another person in academia; surprising! I too had a long break from RPing sometime during college and just joined the site a few years back after having spent a good number of years in the field. Never intended to be in the sciences but I graduated right in the middle of the recession and lucked out getting a gig programming for proteomics lab. Moved on to metabolomics now and still playing the part of the "token non-scientist computer guy" XD

Re: refusing to eat kibble, my first suspicion would be damage/abcess at or near a tooth which would cause pain in chewing, especially if it reached serious weight loss. If her breath stinks or anything it might be the latter?

ahhh yea academia has been a wild world. can't decide if I love it or hate it, honestly. I'm toying around with going for a phd- I love the research but good lord I am tired of being poor. what sort of metabolomics? I've only been exposed to it briefly through an animal science project, but it seems pretty darn useful.

thank you dark! I saw that the images weren't working but my internet was being a bitch and I was tired and cranky so I left it, hah. I thought teeth as well and the only thing on bloodwork was a mild infection, so we did a round of antibiotics and a dental. Didn't find anything super significant on the dental and it seemed to improve her eating some, but not as much as I'd like. an additional factor is the fact that cinnamon finds it highly amusing to pounce on her whenever she goes to the food bowl. I think it is a combo of these two plus her tastes changing as she ages, because she's finicky about which flavors/textures/temperatures of canned food she'll eat now too. In the last week or so I've gotten really aggressive about feeding her and doing so next to me so she can eat undisturbed, but I'm probably going to take her back in again soon or take her to the vet school (which is of course stupidly expensive, sigh)

but yea, they keep me entertained, if nothing else. I was just thinking yesterday that I might have to build a character based off of one of them- brace yourselves xD

Our lab is more of a collaborative lab than involved in any specific end goals like when I was over in proteomics (most closely related lab back then was working on early detection methods for colon cancer). I don't know a huge amount about the science- as said I jest that I'm the barista/councilor/tech guy whose main job happens to be programming internal tools for the actual PHD holders to use.

Main thing I know is that there are two (I think they are) HCDs and an Orbitrap behind my desk that I have to make sure stay backed up XD

Right now my personal major project is a suite that would allow us to do quicker pathway analysis on our identifications by linking between KEGG, HMDB, and LipidMaps (and really looking at those links to make sure they are proper; you'd be surprised how often you have oddities such as both HMDB and LipidMaps "Tetradecanedioic acid" entries thinking they are linked to the KEGG entry for "Isofenphos"). Aside from stuff like that though its going pretty well and have some fun side-effects from the project such as discovering a new way of looking at the data as a whole to produce useful statistical scores.

ok some info about me! yay. i'm nonbinary, so they/them pronouns pls ty. i'm 18, rapidly approaching the end of my senior year of high school. yikes. going to university, where i'll be studying psychology! hoping to take a gap year first tho...we'll see.

ok what else to talk about. i'm obsessed with musicals. haha on my first post here, i said i was "slowly getting into hamilton." two years later...i've gotten into heathers, dear evan hansen, be more chill, wicked, waitress, bare, mean girls, matilda...a lot has changed. i am currently very very obsessed with wicked, and i have been ever since i saw it april 28, 2018. it's so good guys. so good.

i write! and not just in rp cx i mostly just do fanfics that...tend to not go finished. oops. i try! mostly working on some wicked fics, but i also have some with homestuck, heathers, dear evan hansen, steven universe, and others! you can find them all here.
