Take a break. That's just another way of saying give up. Mayfal couldn't give up. If this were really a fight there wouldn't be a break.
"Go back to where you were," Mayfal spat, "I'm not done yet." Mayfal was already shaking, but they were standing now. They could keep going!
@Comet
Defeat was indeed better than dying, but so was staying alive.
Mayfal inhaled, allowing their body to regain its energy, its strength, and latching onto the key scent again. Mayfal could smell and hear Comet clearly, but that still didn't seem to be enough. They needed to feel Comet, somehow, from a distance. Maybe they could feel her warmth, since they knew it like they knew her taste. She wasn't to far from Mayfal either, so there must be warmer air closer to her location. The warmth would also be a quicker indicator than smell.
They used this peculiar triangulation technique and thought of a new strategy. One came to mind rather quickly. Why not use their impairment as an advantage? If they went in a different direction than where they knew Comet was, they could catch her off guard. Mayfal might actually be able to catch her! But it would be tricky, especially with how tired they had become. It was still worth a shot for the practice of it at least.
Mayfal turned slightly to the right of where Comet was waiting... and leapt.
@Comet
It was working! Mayfal had heard Comet moving and she was closer to them now. This would make the next step much easier.
While Comet was preparing her next move, they'd continue with theirs. A continuous, uninterrupted flow. At least, that had been the idea.
Mayfal turned back towards the sound of Comet landing on the ground and leapt forward again. In the commotion, though, they had miscalculated somewhere. Forgot something. Felt the heat brush right past them and then tasted dirt.
@Comet
Mayfal got their head out of the dirt and spat a little. Their near flawless plan had gone so wrong! Oh well, there were other things to try. They took a step forward to get some balance but it was...wet?! It hadn't been like this before! What had happened?
Instead of gaining balance, Mayfal lost it again. This simply wouldn't do. They couldn't fight while constantly slipping. Damn this blindness! If only they could SEE the wet areas! Mayfal's frustration was prevalent in their wrinkled muzzle, bared teeth, and soft growl.
Sight was never going to happen. They had to be smarter about this. Clearly this was the work of magic, and they had magic, too. They wouldn't have to worry about slipping on water if the water was gone before they took the next step.
@Comet
Mayfal, bathing in steam, had solid yet isolated ground. They could feel heat all around them, so their next attack wouldn't be so accurate. And from the sound and smell of it, Comet didn't seem to be moving either.
They needed to get closer, but that would make them vulnerable. However, they could cloak themself in steam by evaporating more of the puddles. Then they could get close with cover. They wouldn't be able to tell if it had worked though. Oh, the irony.
Mayfal continued walking slowly towards Comet's scent. Maintaining the spell was difficult, but necessary.
