More and more Gembounds filtered into the area, and Macawi watched them all with interest. She didn’t intend to interfere with whatever was going on. Obviously, whoever was in charge was letting her stay out of the goodness of their hearts (or whatever). She wasn't a part of this group meeting, so she sort of backed away from the main area and trotted to the back where she wouldn’t be so obtrusive. Macawi could be very intrusive, when she wanted to be. But she wasn’t an asshole. This was the third meeting she’d attended which she had not specifically been invited to. She liked listening in, but she knew that didn’t give her the right to butt into things.

She watched as certain people looked at others, or looked away from others. She noticed that some came alone and others came in small groups. She noted mentally that she always came to these things alone. Briefly, her mind flitted to Baratheon, and she wondered what he was doing at this moment. She shook her head to clear her mind. What were these feelings she had for him? They were very odd, and confusing, and distracting. As a nomad, the little coyote wasn’t meant for a life of attachment to a single person. She really needed to get a grip on herself…

"Speech"

Words: 221
The lioness smiled at the coyote as she approached though Cadence simply set up a glare. The tiny cub wanted nothing to do with the conversation, she just wanted to sulk in peace. Makyna however gave a rather large smile at the jovial stranger. She had such a strange way of speaking but that didn't matter so long as she was polite. "Hello there, Macawi, it's nice to meet you! My name is Makyna Songcat and this is my daughter, Cadenza. The cub twitched an ear irritably at the name "Cadenza" but said nothing out loud. No sooner had she given an introduction did her teddy bear bound over with her other children. "Ah, here are my other two children Sonata and Baroque and my husband, Leon." The lioness introduced them politely. At Bevy's words she gave a bright grin. That was exactly what she was going for! She would have replied but Leon used a paw and mussed up the carefully placed fur and flower!

Makyna glared at the bear, "Leon! I just fixed her fur and now it's ruined!" The lioness scolded. However, Cadence seemed quite happy at the new hairdo as the fur fell messily into her right eye as it usually did. Where she formerly had been pouting she now sat up and grinned. With an exasperated sigh the lioness simply shook her head, "Well, it's alright. I'll just have to fix it again after the meeting." And then the cub was slouching and pouting again.

It was then that she noticed something or rather, someone. That dark fur and the gem-horns could only belong to one creature... Cancer! The lioness found her eyes automatically drawn to him and she set up a glare at his back like medusa, ready to turn him to stone. However, a part of her reasoned with her... It had been cycles since his exile and he'd even fought beside her teddy bear. Was it time to let bygones be bygones? The lioness thought so... While Cancer wasn't her favorite gembound she couldn't keep holding a grudge and with some effort managed to avert her gaze and listen to the bird speaking.

The lioness remained silent though. She had no news to contribute at the moment.

"Talking looks like this!"
"Singing looks like this!"
Thinking looks like this...

Dragging himself to the edge of the group was difficult enough, but now the cat had to mind all the other Gembounds that had come to join them. He'd noticed the big bear going to join the lioness, and their children trailing behind and sitting with them. He had also spotted a black leopard that rang slightly familiar to him, and Bartos was certain he'd seen the larger cat in Orion a few times, hanging around the throne before that evil stag had taken over. A clouded leopard with odd growths on her had joined him, as well as two more younger Gembounds, but one of them looked like a bird - oh, but that one looked like the Maji Walezi leader. He narrowed his eyes slightly, momentarily distracted in his struggle to understand the dynamics of this group.

And then his mind drifted. It traveled to links between other Gembounds that he might have known or seen in another life. Faces that he had witnessed in passing, or for a single day he had known them. Effigies of past creatures, poorly drawn in his mind's eye, and voice that had belonged to a distant breath, and then one of them found its way among the memories flowing gentle through his thoughts. It was small, it could have been so easily ignored had he not paid attention. But he did. And as soon as he heard it, he zoned right in on it, drawing all of his attention to the sweet lilt that began to speak to him with images and feelings - he was sure this was a memory, despite how fresh it felt. It felt new, like she was delivering it to him for the very first time.

Her words at last came clear to him. A reflection in a pristine pool of water, an even, cheerful voice jumping out from the dead and dusty silence. I want...I want everything, just with you. Do you know how beautiful you are, Bartos?

He felt his breath hitch and his heart had jumped up into his throat. It was like the voice had taken everything out of him, weakening him, drawing him back to the earth - like everything had crashed down on him all at once, reminding him of things he could have had, things that could have been. His insides wrenched and in that instant, he felt his eyes grow damp with the threat of tears. In that moment, an opposite force had come to smother him. Before he could even register his approach, a great pair of jaws had come down to clutch his nape, picking him up by the scruff and carrying him through the Gembounds towards the center of the group. Bartos' eyes widened with surprise, but much like a kitten in the grip of its mother, all he did was curl his three functional legs up against his stomach until Quintus had deposited him on the ground next to him.

With a huff, Bartos settled on the ground. His shoulders rolled and he shook out his fur, his broken leg extended awkwardly out to the side while he glanced up at Quintus. Relief swelled through him - at least his friend was here now and he could push the voice aside, swallow it down, remember it another time when he was lonelier. "Hey Quintus." The cat answered shakily, peering up at him. He sucked in a breath and tore his eyes from the lion, landing them on Bevy - it was just as well, the bird had started to speak, kicking off the meeting with a play by play of all the events that had transpired in the cave. Makyna and Leon's children, Hasira's defeat - Bartos had heard more of his fair share of the ordeal while recovering in the cave, and he couldn't help the small bitterness in his heart that he heard nothing of Clover or her safety - and Cancer's return, but Bartos knew nothing about that. The bird fell silent, encouraging those gathered to speak on events of interest. He briefly considered giving his thanks to the group for taking him in, but his wavering mood and descending confidence kept him quiet.

Bevy waited for a moment, wings tucked at her side, but no one seemed to have any more news. The bird's eyes landed on Quintus and Bartos, and she considered a little longer exactly what she wanted to say next. After a breath, she lifted a wing and carried on.

"Moving on to our next bit of business, I want to formally announce a few important changes to our ranks. Some time ago, I spoke to Dark about becoming a scout, and since he has taken his trial. I wish to also announce Bartos as a new member of Maji Walezi. While he is here, he shall hold the rank of Coordinator, and if he wishes to stay once he has healed, he may. Leon has also asked to switch ranks to Guardian... Because, of course, of our newest members."

The bird gently waved the cubs and their proud parents forward. "Welcome, Cadenza, Sonata and Baroque. With time I know you will all grow into great, powerful gembounds just like your parents. Soon you will have your own trials, and find your places among your peers." She bowed her beak towards the children, eyes sparkling.

"Quintus, you are more than old enough to take the trials," the bird peeped up, casting her glance once more to the dark lion. "We will have to see to that soon. I'm sure Leon and Makyna will be more than happy to take you through it, and then you can take your rank."

That out of the way, she turned to a few awkwardly out of place gembounds. There was the dog-like one, with the headdress, and Bevy looked at her first. "Of course, if anyone else would like to join, they are more than welcome." Her gaze quickly turned to the water, where Cerulean and Eeya awaited. "I know that Eeya has made a few water critter friends, and they are also free to join our ranks. Simply speak up, and I would be more than happy to make it official."

"... Speaking of, Cancer's exile has ended and he has brought his children. Whether or not they decide to return to Maji Walezi, they are still my own kin. I want you all to meet Remedy and Cure, children of Cancer, Amaria, and I. I'm sure you all see the resemblance." The words felt awkward in her beak, the screeching of the venomous man in her head. Every time she looked at Remedy, he started going off. It was frustrating, but at least she had the saving grace of having a beak-- it made her expression a bit harder to read.

"So if anyone wishes to join... Or rejoin... Or take a trial, please, speak now. If not immediately, we may discuss it after the meeting."

The bird tucked her feathers in and regarded the group quietly for a moment, letting her words settle in, and allowing anyone else to speak their piece.
But don't you come here and say I didn't warn you
About the way your world can alter
And oh how you try to command it all still
Every single time it all shifts one way or the other

And I'm a goddamn coward, but then again so are you
And the lion's roar, the lion's roar
Has me evading and hollering for you
And I never really knew
what to do

Bevy spoke about him being a scout; that much, he knew. Everything else was too much for him to catch--a whirlwind of thought and words, her melodic voice dimming to a gentle twitter in the backdrop of his mind. In his eye he saw dancing lights and colors, the image he held of Bevy's voice; and he was content merely to sit, and listen. There were so many other voices, too--voices he didn't recognize, young and playful, and they made him want to go and pounce and flop and chase in fun. And something from the water, something else melodic and twittering.

But then Bevy was mentioning a trial. He'd taken a trial...? He wasn't sure what this meant. Had there been some mistake? Then she was asking about it, again. Maybe she meant Cancer's trial, the one he'd spoken at? But what did it mean to "take" it?

Quietly, gently, he peeped up.

"What do you mean by 'trial?'" he asked softly, careful to phrase his words in a respectful, respectable manner. He managed to not add "Bevybevybevybevy," and maybe that was a good thing, but his ignorance at the rest might well make up for it.

________________

The meeting continued with a quick pace and Carcino felt his embarrassment from before subside. He glanced around at the various faces as Calypso called them each by name, committing them to memory. Bartos. The Songcat three- he made a note to mention that cute title to Leon later- and then to his own twin girls as they were introduced. A bubbling sense of pride graced him for once and the old cat sat taller, tail flicking to rest its ragged tip on Amaria's shoulder. My girls... my redemption. And then, the offer was made to stay.

He didn't look away from Amaria, hoping to catch her gaze. If we stay, we'd be home, really home. This is where the girls should've been born... where they should've been raised. None of the trouble with Hasira would've happened then. A dark cloud drifted in. It's my own fault they were excluded in the first place. Amy... she'd never have stayed if the girls hadn't been conceived in Orion. Oh, but he was grateful. If we stayed, the girls would have structure... but if we go back to Canis... they'll be less exposed.

For once, he felt so unsure that, desperately, he hoped Amaria would be the deciding factor this time. He couldn't honestly decide- and with a quick glance to Makyna, he felt even more torn- she'd looked away from him, ignoring him, which could've meant any number of things. If she'd moved past that, maybe, he'd be welcome by everyone again, and there'd be no strife. Their kids could grow up together, and maybe, they could even manage a friendship again someday. But, if she so deemed it, Makyna had sway over the Maji, more than he did, surely. If she so willed it, as she'd once done, he'd be out of a home again- and then where would his family be?

It's stupid thinking, his mind scolded him. She doesn't give two shallow pits about you, so stop worrying. You have Amaria now, and Cure, and Remedy, and Enna, the Bonebound love you and your family. If Maji doesn't work out, you could always go back there- so what's the big deal? Amaria. Would she even want to stay? Again, he searched for her gaze and begged the silent question; would this be home again?

@Amaria @Makyna @Bevy (tagging those mentioned)
Baroque couldn't believe how many people were here. And every few minutes, it felt like absolutely everyone was looking at him. He snuggled into his big papa bear, but even the comfort of his family wasn't enough to keep him from not looking like a huge baby in front of everyone when Bevy called out his name.

His big blue eyes met their leader and the waterworks started. Hiccups, followed by sobbing, it was all he could do to keep from making a huge fuss. He inhaled sharply, trying to force the tears back, but by now everyone knew he was a cry baby. He swallowed and breathed in, hiccuping again, and finally brought his paws to his face, trying to hide himself from everyone.

He was such a disappointment, wasn't he?

The bear couldn't help but feel some small embarrassment after mussing up Cadence's hair and realizing that Makyna had spent so long on it - she'd turned to him and scolded him for messing up her fur, to which Leon pinned his ears back and laughed nervously, but then shrugged it off with the decision to fix it later. Leon blinked at the lioness, that sly smile slow returning to his lips, a playful and mischievous simper he almost dared her to turn and see. Maybe he'd mess up Cadence's hair again. Or maybe he'd let Makyna do her thing. Or maybe he'd mess up Makyna's hair. He partway extended this sensation out to her in a bid for her attention, wanting to catch her eyes, to exchange a secret so boldly before the eyes of everyone.

Before long, Bevy had started off the meeting. He hadn't noticed the look his lioness burned into the shoulder of the leopard - his eyes had fixed on the bird, and then shifted down to his children, making sure everybody was still sitting and paying attention. Baroque had some point had burrowed into his side, but Leon straightened up and wrapped his paw around the boy's shoulders in an attempt to comfort him. He nodded as Bevy went over the events of the cave, casting his gaze to those mentioned - briefly his attention lingered on Quintus, having seen the lion take hold of the cat with the broken leg and plop him up near the front of the group. He must have made a friend in the little dweeb. Leon bit back a snicker.

The conversation soon shifted to new positions within Maji Walezi. There was quite a bit to shuffle around now that the group had grown and enough time had passed, most of the Gembounds they considered youngsters would be old enough to hold a real rank - and yet, Leon felt somewhat hypocritical at the thought, since he himself had been ranked a Scout when Maji Walezi first formed and they'd only been alive for like... a few weeks. But he'd discussed it with Bevy before hand, and Scout felt a bit too worn to be a job for someone like him. Leon was big, gruff, intimidating - he wasn't the kind of Gembound to go out into the caves and try to convince others to join. He didn't mind it, but half the time it really didn't work, considering how badly he had scared Carrie when she'd returned. It suited him far better to stay here in Pisces and protect the cave, protect his children, and his wife and friends. So when she brought up his change in position, Leon smiled and nodded.

There was talk of Dark taking his trial, and Quintus having to take a trial to fit into one of the ranks too. The bear cast his gaze out to the lion, quietly wondering what path he would pursue. Leon would be more than happy to run his trial if he wanted to be a Guardian - in fact, he almost hoped that was the case, just because Leon wouldn't mind getting in some personal time with the younger Gembound. Then finally, they moved on to a new subject: Cancer's exile. Or rather, Cancer's return. Leon glanced now over at Cancer, who in turn seemed to be focusing on his family. Leon had little preference for Cancer's decision - they had moved past their serious childhood rivalry - until it came to Amaria, and then the bear found himself hoping that Amaria would lobby to stay. He missed her, and her disappearance - her near death at the hands of Raheerah - only served to remind him how much he had taken her for granted. Besides, if she stayed, then his children would get the chance to grow up with hers. They were two families that could thrive side by side. And... well, as much as he still held Cancer at arm's length, he wanted that. He craved that closeness.

Baroque's shifting had broken his thoughts. The boy by now was sobbing, and Leon turned his head towards the grizzlion, snuffling his nose into the flat of his head. "Hey now, it's all good, kiddo." Leon murmured gently, grinning. "They're gonna talk about trials, and rank stuff - Quintus might undergo one of the trials. Isn't that exciting? You and the girls can cheer him on." He laughed. Maybe they'd think it was cool. He imagined Cadence would probably be most excited about it. Sonata probably wouldn't care, and... Baroque might cry if anything went bad. But Leon had faith it would turn out for the better.

Dark peeped up beside her and she turned her beak towards him, blinking softly as she tried to remember exactly what trial she had put the bird through. Technically, not anything officially. But, well, he had frankly done enough to deserve his rank. Between everything else, she wasn't exactly... The bird quietly cooed to the larger owl, explaining away the question quickly, "Remember, with Raheerah? The dragon in Polaris. You scouted that out, and you did a great job. That was your trial."

All explained, the bird looked back at the main group. Calypso glanced around, waiting just a moment longer, before her voice broke through the air once more.

"Alright then... I guess that brings us to the next matter at hand... Today, I step down as Leader of Maji Walezi. We must elect a new leader every four cycles, so as to keep fresh our values and allow democracy to take place. I will accept nominations now-- but before I do, I want to institute a new rule. Any gembound under four cycles may not become leader. We founded our group when we were children, before we were ready for the responsibility of everyone on our shoulders. I would not ask anyone to shoulder such a burden again while they should be growing and learning of the world."

"Anyone disagree with this rule?"
She asked the group, waiting a moment for protests-- expecting them from the children, perhaps, but she doubted any one else would object. She spoke up again when the voices hardly outnumbered the silence.

"Then we agree. I have a single nomination--" Her voice cut off, an awkward, blinking pause as a new headmate fought for control. Her feathers fluffed up and she shook her head, stammering slightly as she got out her words, "... Sorry, I... I wish to nominate Leon."

And then, abruptly, the bird gave a flap of his wings and turned his beak to Cancer. "Okay, but can we also nominate Cancer too? Come on, it'd be fun. Old rivals at it again-- besides, maybe the handsome bastard will stay if we let him be leader again." The bird winked over at Cancer, his voice deeper but filled to the brim with flirty, lightheartedness.

If Calypso could blush, she would, as she shoved Rajani back. "I... Caves, forgive me," she huffed, fixing her feathers quickly. "Ahem-- besides Leon, and Cancer, I guess, do we have any other nominations?" The sneaky, flirty bird was still hovering right over her shoulder, trying to shove more words in their beak, but she held him off. There was a reason why she was getting sick of being leader-- it was hard enough being in charge of just her own head, much less the whole of Maji Walezi.

And frankly, she hoped no one raised too many eyebrows at the dumb, casanova twerp who had interrupted.
But don't you come here and say I didn't warn you

votes will go up tomorrow, and people will have until the 20th to vote! After the 20th, people can start exiting the thread. Thanks so far for a great meeting, everyone!)
Bevy was stepping down. Made sense- with so much having happened lately. He nodded along as she also enlisted one last new rule- and that, too, made perfect sense. He nodded again. She'll be much happier knowing someone else is in charge, who's been around a while. Oh, and she was nominating Leon. Again, he nodded- that also made sense.

Then a familiar voice broke from the bird and mid-nod, Carcino blinked and whirled with a double-take. Raj, what-- Suddenly, he was nominated for leadership. Suddenly, he felt as if every eye had turned to him. He looked between the gathered crowd and little Bevy, now easily Calypso again. Raj, why would you- He tensed. No one's gonna vote for me, why would you even bother? He shifted on his paws with a sigh, looking more nervous than anything else.

"...Raj..." He found himself smirking. That little character was probably waiting for this. "Guess we'll let the votes decide if we stay." He turned to Amaria questioningly. "Unless you wanted to..." He trailed off, seeking her opinion on Pisces, her reaction to his sudden nomination. Ha, wonder if the family gets a vote here.
