She had been considering, planning, and watching. After instructing the Hive to withdraw from all overt activities a couple weeks back, Mother had been debating how best to proceed.

She'd finally struck on it, she thought, and now... she needed volunteers.
A link was opened with the Hive as a whole. While others could usually simply tune her out, this time it was like someone clinking a wine glass with a fork to politely but firmly request attention.
They would be accompanied, she told them--at the same time as she spoke, in imagery of a pair of Praetors. It would be a quick mission, if all went well. And hopefully they would run into no trouble, no violence. Certainly she didn't wish to start any.
But the Hive had been sitting on information. It was time to begin to share it, even if their potential allies were... those only of convenience, at best tentative and at worst, dangerous. Still... if it weakened Chaos, here?
One cycle, a minor scuffle, a cute little surprise party, a life-changing religious encounter, and many, many bags of chips later, Jinyi was back. Or more accurately, he came back to the tunnels and the chip factory pretty much every day, but he was back to this particular matter—that was, TRANSCENDING. Anyway, Jinyi was BACK, and he was READY. Hopefully. As ready as he'd ever be, at any rate, and besides he always felt ready for literally anything ever since literal Dontacael had looked at him and said his name and wished him good luck. Yeahhhhhh. Nothing was getting him down after that.
Deep within Ursa's tunnels, excitement glimmered along the Hive's link as Zero-Zero-Four Manager's mind sought out Zero-Zero-Six Juggernaut's and prodded for its attention. Where was Juggernaut? It should come meet Jinyi, who was already traveling through the tunnels to find it. He had a surprise for it!

The Ursa winds were fierce and cold as Tectus began her descent, some branches of tough winter leaves clutched in her jaws. She had thought to perhaps hide her bright colors before stepping into the cave, but in moments she realized she wouldn't need to. Snow was easily collecting in the divets of her scales, clinging onto her spikes and chilling her to the bone. She would be covered in it before she reached the peak. A good disguise for her intended ambush.

Her business here was collection. She had been considering this for a while during Eridanus's final days with the hive. Had Vargas ever constructed a beast to monitor Ursa properly? They knew the Hive was here, after all, even if an assault wouldn't happen again soon, it might be good to have a gembound to keep an eye on it.

She'd considered a few of the Lessers already there, but decided the Ghostbird might be the best - it could soar far above and keep an eye on everything. Hopefully, it would have her strength as well, to fight if it needed.

Once she'd reached the peak of the smaller mountain, Tectus roamed, looking for a good spot. Even for Gembound that could fly, the bird would prove elusive. She needed to ambush it. She eventually found a good dip in the stones that was covered in snow. It was large enough to just cover her as she crouched. Cringing at its icy touch, she began to worm her way into the snowdrift, pressing herself deeper and using her tail to kick the snow back over herself. Hopefully, that would be enough.
The chrysalis was tucked away in one of the dead-end tunnels, a tiny thing compared to most drones produced by The Hive. At regular intervals a cleaner would visit to tidy up the already pristine tunnel and examine the chrysalis, but otherwise it was left to grow and develop until it would finally be of use to The Hive.

And now, the creature inside was awakening. Its empty, barely-awake mind brushes against the edges of the mental link, alerting The Hive to its general existence before it was even truly cognizant of its own existence. By the time it figured out what to do, and how to break out of this tiny, cramped void, a couple of cleaners had already arrived, waiting expectantly. It finally broke out into the world only to be met by several gigantic insectoid faces peering down at it. It did not feel fear even as the mandibles got closer, began to clear away shards of clearstone and puddles of chrysalis fluid. It knew it was safe and among family. It did not feel curiosity, either. It knew that it was exactly where it was supposed to be, and that all else would be made clear in time. It DID, however, feel irreconcilably filthy, and an overpowering need to rectify this immediately. First its antenna, so it could better parse it's surroundings in the dark, and then systematically moving on to the rest of it's pelt.

There was a strange sound like a beating drum. It accompanied the black-shrouded figure who had appeared at the edge of the Hive, as he made his way--head slightly stooped so that he could fit--through the narrower tunnels. He seemed to take no precautions for his own safety, and the brief conversation he had had by the Drowned Forest entrance had apparently earned him passage... for now. He held something in his hands, something long and flat and bundled.

The drumbeat thud grew louder, and the horned figure raised his head. Crimson pinprick eyes, sharply alert, picked the shapes from the darkness: the Praetors, marching in step, their numbers so great throughout the Hive that the floor of it rang with their synchronized movements.

"My my, Mother... all of this, for me?" he murmured, some faint and sardonic emotion placed on the title--or the name.

The voice was commanding, indeed maternal, and strong. Yet the creature that pushed its way past the Praetors drew the eye downward: a scraggly Echoing Gray, its pale eyes empty of the scorching stare the Collector was sure she would have given him in person. "No, my question is... give me one reason I should not kill you."

In the depths of the Ursa tunnels, where no one could see his face, there was no need for Jinyi to project any expressions onto his blank visage. However, he was doing it anyway, seemingly slacking off from his factory job as he stared at his reflection in the smooth icy walls and adjusted the chromatophores ever-so slightly. A strikingly creepy impression of a two-dimension-ified bird's face was plastered over his face. The shadows by the raptor's hooked beak were off somehow, and he couldn't get them right.

Believe it or not, Drone Zero-Zero-Four Manager was actually deep in thought about how to better serve the Hive.

His skill with magic had grown since his days as a freshly-created Drone. However, in a cave system where plenty of Gembound had achieved the same or better mastery over their magic, he could still be better. There was a bird in Polaris who 'transcended' people, so to speak, giving them access to incredibly powerful spells that couldn't be learned without it.

Personal issues with Polaris aside, Jinyi thought he had a nonzero chance of being killed on the spot if he showed himself in front of the bird.

So what could he do? Would this be the ceiling of his magic level? Must Order be the underdog forever, compared to the best of the best in the caves? Or was there some other way? Would the man with stars in his eyes show himself again if the Hive performed well enough to catch his attention, bestowing magic upon them all like he had with the gift of Iteration?
Deep within the Hive's Dontas Factory, its manager was spending his working hours making something decidedly inedible. And also, should any Drones or Hosts peer through the Hivemind at what he was doing, they would get the gentle but distinct sense that he would prefer if it was a secret for now. No, secret was too strong of a word. A surprise. Mother knew everything he was doing as clearly as ever, but he wanted to keep this a surprise for its intended recipient--especially if it did not work.

A crystalline workbench on which dough had been flattened had been cleared and requisitioned for this purpose. On it lay a shining metal music box, which had been partially disassembled. Drone Zero-Zero-Four Manager hovered over it, facial features indistinct, holding a complicated clockwork mechanism with small sculpted figures attached. As he lifted a hand, a delicate white screwdriver grew from his fingertip, and he carefully detached each of these figures from their mechanism.
Somewhere near the Clearstone spire, a room twisted open in a spiral of fractals and shifting shapes. It formed a small manufacturing line that began to produce a quartz-like twisted chip dusted with Clearstone powder, shimmering with speckles of the rainbow like broken glass. Somehow, the taste was like cheese and the dust stuck to anything it touched. A tasty snack that would soon make its way freely through the caves, packaged in a biodegradable paper-like bag (which could also be safely eaten). The material of the chip and the bag were a true mystery... but edible!

Production has begun for Dontas!

Eating Dontas slowly infects one with Mother/Order. Side effects include feelings of happiness and togetherness like the Dontas are your family. Consuming a large amount of Dontas may result in permanent change. Consult your Dontas today to see if Dontas are right for you. Dontas! Dontas!

And a jingle would spread, heralding the coming of the chip:
Dontas, Dontas! Dontcha' wanta Donta?

MOTHER

THE URSA NODE

Deep within the Glacier, winding ice tunnels form a maze. These branch beneath the ice, beneath the mountains, jagged, cold and dark. The deeper one goes, the more eerie they become: labyrinthine, twisting and branching, lightless. In the deepest portions there is a strange and acrid scent pooling here and there: an odor that smells of danger. Ice-like statues of living things--no two alike, and all with frightened faces--can be found at random points throughout these tunnels.

In places, after branches upon branches, converging and diverging, these tunnels curve back upward. Nestled beneath Ursa Major, a chosen dozen or so out of hundreds of paths gradually twist their way in the blind and bitter cold to the Ursa Node of Mother's Hive here in Origin Cave.

From these inner tunnels to the nest itself, there is perfect symmetry. Each tunnel has its twin, perfectly mirrored to it. Each entrance is guarded by a matched Praetor pair: enormous insectoid soldiers that check each entering being for signs of Mother infection before allowing it within. Those uninfected are killed, pursued, the Praetors all programmed to never let an uninfected Gembound escape to reveal the Hive's location. Their venom--from fang and stinger--rapidly crystallizes the target, preventing a return to the chrysalis and leaving the mysterious 'statues' throughout the tunnels.

The Cleaners, the worker caste of the Hive, wander in and out in small numbers: less armed than the Praetors, these forage for prey through the tunnels, and very rarely outside of it, while maintaining the integrity and symmetry of the tunnel network using a clear secretion that hardens to ice-like amber. The Cleaners that find living beings that they don't view as prey often try to remove any non-symmetrical body parts, occasionally to fatal effect. Neither Cleaners nor Praetors ever have gemstones; instead a thin and fragile crystalline lattice makes up their 'brain' and nervous system. These Cleaners are distracted by items scattered before them: a Cleaner will break off a pursuit to arrange the items in an ordered fashion.

The heart of the Nest is a warmer room, high within Ursa Major. This is a cave within the cave, a perfectly symmetrical place of honeycombed, ice-like cells, many full of growing larvae tended by the Cleaners and heavily guarded outside by Praetors. A vast, pulsating mass of flesh and white mold takes up this space, strings of mold connecting every part of the insectoid Queen's throbbing body to the walls, floor and ceiling of the cave. It is from Her that the Mother's voice emanates, at last: this is Mother, and these are her Children.
